The Brand Challenge At AgentGenius - A Way To Learn From Your Past Blogs

Looking Back In Time At AgentGenius - The Stigliano ChroniclesWhen was the last time you looked back?

The other day, I wrote "The Brand Challenge - Looking Back In My Blogging History" for The Stigliano Chronicles at AgentGenius about taking a look at some of my early attempts at blog posts and using them to figure out where I had come from and hopefully learn a bit more about where I was going.

The idea of The Brand Challenge came from Ken Brand, one of my favorite writers and someone who is constantly asking questions and pushing me to be better.  He's a contributor at AgentGenius, but also a frequent commentor.  In a previous post, he had challenged me to look back at those early days and write a post about it.  So I did.

We learn by doing.

Blogging is not an art, a science, and most certainly not a hobby (although I do enjoy it).  As I wrote more and more, I became more passionate about every word and every paragraph.  I learned what was effective for me.  We don't all think, read, or write the same, so not everything works for everyone.

With continued blogging though, I have "found my voice" and know what works for me.  But along the way, I also learned what works in order to get me where I want to be.  This morning, Jeremy Blanton wrote "Enjoy One on One Blog Training from ActiveRain" were he wrote:

One of the biggest fears that new members face is writing that first initial blog post.  Many are afraid that what they write will not be good enough or that they will mess things up by writing a bad post.  Beginners end up scaring themselves from ever actually writing that first initial post and end up never realizing the benefits of ActiveRain. Trust me when I say, I can relate.  I was so nervous when I started here and my first few posts were terrible.

I think Jeremy is a great blogger, so there I was staring at the same feelings I experienced when I started.  Knowing you're not alone is always a good feeling that helps relax you and settle into that "voice" that you need to find as a blogger.  The more you let go, the more you will begin to build on that voice.

After you've been blogging for awhile, I challenge you to go back.  Look at where you started, look at where you are, and see where you can go.  Blogging is not formulaic or stodgy, it is a fluid craft that you can literally do your own way.  Sure there are some basics you should know and will help push your blog to great heights, but the content is the key...and only you can create that.

Matt, I think that even in the short time that I've been consistently blogging, I've evolved.  Some posts, like statistics or listings are pretty cut & dried.  But other posts give a real chance to be creative.  I find myself blogging much like I talk.  With some asides and tongue-in-cheek comments.  It is enjoyable.  I'm going to read what Ken Brand has to say - thanks!

Russell - After my last post about "experts" I think the "we learn by doing" lesson is obviously one of my favorites.  Thanks for stopping by and enjoy your coaching today - the heat is coming back!

Hi Matt:

I guess we all stumbled a bit with our first few posts!

I wouldn't have even read, let alone, commented on my first posts!

And if I did comment, it would have been something like, "Please, for the sake of humanity, stop blogging. You're killing us!"

Thankfully, my blogging is a constant work in progress and has progressed to the point where even I like some of them!

Susan - I have a thing for the "()" when writing for use of my own little asides.  I might even be accused of over using them (as well as "," and "...").  See what I mean?  I find conversational style blogs much easier to read and also much more interesting to me.

Toula - It's good to stumble.

Craig - I can barely read your stuff now.  Just kidding.  I remember thinking "why would anyone comment on this" after writing an early post.  As I learned more about what I liked, I was able to bring that to my own posts.

Christianne - I bet a lot of new bloggers get hit with the paralysis.

Hi Matt... I love looking back at my early posts and writings.  About the time I turned 200,000 points, several people told me how far I had come as a writer and I really didn't notice any difference until I went back and read my early posts.  It's usually only by direct comparison that we see the incremental changes that occur over time!

Matt, I have always thought that you have a gift for writing and for blogging.  I don't want to look back at my previous posts for obvious reasons.... ;o)

Steve - Sometimes it's painful to look at old posts, but I do think there is a lot of positive in there.  I think I'll have to dig deep into your blog and find those early ones.  As a writer that I think it excellent, it would be interesting to see where you came from.

Shirley - Thanks, I appreciate that.  I've said it before - I think my trick is to talk as if we were having a face to face conversation.  You've spoken to me on the phone, so I think you probably "get it" in that sense.

Matt - We definitely can learn a lot from those old posts.  And even learn a lot from what we are doing now.  One of the reasons I like AR so much is all the support and resources that comes with that.

Matt, I was terrified to do the first blog. And the second. I believe it was one of your blogs that caused me to write one where I included other bloggers and a bit about them. Since then I've posted photos, videos targeted to first-time home buyers, reblogs of some excellent information from others. Still have that knarly knot in my stomach. What I do notice is how many people seem to enjoy the photo and video blogs...I plan to keep on doing those. Still in the big learning curve.

I've been surfing through some of my old posts in order to update information.  'm not terribly upset over them... sometimes I think I am better now... other times I wonder.
