It's Official, My State is Weird

WVData from the U.S. Census Bureau was analyzed by the Associated Press to find what an "Average American" might be.

The people of Illinois are most like the rest of the nation in terms of race, age, income, eduction, immigration and living conditions.

Who was on the bottom of the list, least like everyone else?  West Virginia.  We are poorer, less ethnically diverse and more rural than the rest of you.

While this may sound like bad news, I choose to be happy about it, as does Scott Finn who wrote about it in this morning's Sunday Gazette Mail.

I found another article titled, "Maybe America Isn't West Virginian Enough" by Ry Rivard in The Daily Athenaeum

This all leaves me feeling very special.  Isn't part of the point of life to stand out, to be different, to do things your very own way?  YES!!

Oh, thank goodness!  West Virginia is different, unusual, one-of-a-kind!

For all of you out there needing a get-away, a vacation, a break from it all -- where else could you go that would be more unlike where you are?  Come visit us here in West Virginia!

We are FRIENDLY.  We care about our families, our friends and our neighbors.  We work together.  We are (slightly more) polite in traffic.  We are some of the only people who know that West Virginia is not a part of Virginia.  (Since June 20, 1863, people!  C'mon!)

  • We are south of the Mason Dixon line so the North won't claim us.
  • We fought for the North in the Civil War so the South won't claim us.
  • We don't touch the Atlantic Ocean so the East Coast won't have us.
  • We are East of the Ohio River so we aren't in the Midwest, either.

That's why we are called West By God Virginia, because God DOES claim us.  (Dad called and helped me with that last bit, thanks Dad and Happy Father's Day!)  He also says you can look all over the state and see God's perfection.  Amen!

I found this video on YouTube and thought it was a great example of some of the ways we're a little "off".  It's beautiful, crazy, wild and fun!  Turn the volume up and see what you're missing if you haven't been here yet!

Elaine - That's why the cows walk in a circle if they come down to the flat parts. ;o)  And thanks for all that great Ohio soil!  We're enjoying it very much!

Ginger - WV jokes?!  No, we tell Ohio or Kentucky jokes around here!  :o)

Eric - Where's your cousin at?  Anywhere near me?  I'll check the report, should put a link in here to the actually list!

Kat - Were the Waltons from here??  I don't know.  I think the Beverly Hillbillies might have been.  Anyone?
Jessica - Wasn't that cool?  I need to make sure to cover Bridge Day this fall!!

Chris - I really liked that soundtrack, so my teenager had to think it was awful.  *Sigh*

Missy - How could I forget that?!  It's GORGEOUS here!!  We have GREEEEEEEEEN everywhere now!  (Except for my yard, which is turning brown and crunchy.  "Would it be too much to ask for a LITTLE PERCIPITATION?")

Leanne - Let your husband drag you here!  I bet you'd love it!

Jay - Aww, you made me smile!  I've got to step up my campaign to help people see how great it is here.

Bryant - I love weird, too!  (And somehow it doesn't surprise me that you like it!)  It is absolutely beautiful here.  I'll keep trying to show you.

Deborah - :o)  Weird IS wonderful!  Maybe I should do a post or two about some of the "unique" aspects of WV!

Cyndee - We are the red headed stepchild of the USA, aren't we?  And we're OK with it!

I've only been to West Virginia once and that was as a youngster.  Not sure about West Virgina now, but I know Sarah Cooper is special, which I guess makes WV special as well.

Washington  DC is mostly rich and poor and very few inbetween. Elaine, you are correct however in that thought?

Eric ... so it's safe to say that "DC is out of touch with middle America". Does that surprise anyone? LOL

I was off  a tad; Waltons Mountain is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains--plain old VA. Just kidding. I am CERTAIN WV is as beautiful as "regular" VA.     By the way, you're are sooooooo funny--with your  Beverly Hillbilly remark.    I use that one when I have clients that say, "I don't want to live near junk or ugly neighbors." I say, "You mean like the "Clampetts?"

Now, I am not saying where this picture might have been taken.  You can come up with your own conclusions.

Seriously, I have been in WV many times... it is absolutely gorgeous.  I have know some of the nicest folks from there.

I would love to buy some land out in Paw Paw.  I really like the area around the pan handle.

Great video.

Mom - Thank you!  I figured I'd have heard something if they were local.

Eric - Oh, thank you for finding that!  You were watching out for me!  I gave up the computer to the kids and forgot to come back and post that.  Thanks!  And you ARE pretty "normal" in Louisiana, huh?

Jason - You're practically next door!  You should spend a little time here -- trust me, it's wonderful!  :o)

Elaine - Somehow, the DC number didn't surprise me at all!  North Carolina did.  That's where my husband is from and we lived there for years -- felt pretty strange to me!  But I guess that was because I was the one from the "different" place!

Thesa - Thanks!  I would say you ARE different!  :oD  And you live in a BEAUTIFUL part of the country, too!

Eric - And probably not much balance between urban and rural areas, either.

Elaine - Noooooo.

Kat - Virgnia, West Virginia ... I think the "average American" thinks it's the same place anyway!  I've had people I've just met (elsewhere) ask me about "Western Virginia" and when I say back "WEST Virginia" they try to correct my grammar!!

Bob - Now you do realize this is a PUBLIC post going to all of West Virginia in Localism, don't you, Bob?  Hmmm?  Do you REALLY want to go there??  Oh, but you SO did, and then you talked nice about us.  It stays.  We can handle it!

Sarah, I loved this post and the ensuing comments.  That was a great video too.  WV is definitely on my list of places to visit, especially since 'meeting' you!  Those numbers on that list look way off btw.  Those lists are always good for a bunch of follow-up articles, not much more.

Sarah,  Rural small town living is great!  I was in Maine this weekend and thought of you as I pulled into my cousin's restaurant for breakfast.  Forgot to ask where he got the name.... Is it pronounced Herikin?  :-)

Hi Sarah - what a neat post on your state and love that video.  Hey, I knew West Virginia wasn't part of Virginia!!  I've traveled through your state, never stayed there but traveled through it and it is very pretty indeed.

Looks like your state is only slightly less 'normal' than mine.   I know why my state of NH and that of Vermont are given the numbers they have in that chart Eric posted - we've been told we're 'too white up this way'.

Very nice post on your state!!

Sorry, since I watched  the movie "Deliverance" a few decades ago, any state in the southern Appalachian range is regarded with a wary eye.  Can't help you - WV qualifies geographically.

Sarah, on Eric's chart New Jersey is ranked 19th in terms of average. We're usually in the Top 20 for toxicity, corruption and bad Saturday Night Live jokes. I guess every state has its challenges.

Hey,Hey watch it! Austins got the market on Weird! I agree with you and your dad though that you have been blessed with a beautiful state. That bridge in the video looked familiar? Was it in a movie that Michael Douglas played in?

Maggie -Wasn't that video great?  It made ME want to visit -- and I'm already here!!  Seriously, any time you need a break, we have a guest room.  It's quiet here, but sometimes that's the best kind of break, right?

Dan - Herrkin?  The "i" kind of disappears if you've lived here forever, but the "r" is drawn out a little.

Ann - I thought you'd know we are a state!  Sometimes I get surprised when people don't, though.  We are not quite as ethnically diverse as I'd like us to be, but it's getting better.  My area is growing!

Jeff - And we are VERY proud to claim you!  C'mon back soon!

Art - Tsk, tsk -- can't believe you went there!!  :o)

Andrew - You've got Kelly Rippa and Janet Evanovich, two very fun ladies!!  I'd say you've got a good thing going there.

Danny - Got a WV state quarter?  Look on the back.  There's that bridge!  It's the New River Gorge Bridge, famous for Bridge Day where people come from around the world to leap off of it.  We do know how to throw a party around here!  I don't know about that movie, though.  Could be!

My best friend from back in the day moved to Hurricane (pronounced Her-eh-kin I was told), and I loved talking to her and her friends on the phone and listening to their sweet southern drawl.  Still on my list of places to visit!  Thanks for the blog about WVa!
