This morning, my husband, Kirk, and I enjoyed the season's debut of the La Quinta Farmers' Market, now commencing its second year in the streets of Old Town.
You couldn't ask for a more appealing backdrop for a food-and-flowers market than the Spanish Colonial architecture of Old Town. The pedestrian-friendly venue has become the heart of historic La Quinta and the nascent market has transformed normally slow Sundays into the week's busiest day for the retail shops.
Between 500 and 1,000 people packed Old Town during the market's first season and the number of vendors this season has increased to 23.
Although September in La Quinta has been unusually warm and today promises temps reaching 106°, the early-morning adventure afforded vacation-perfect weather. We savored homemade pastries under the eaves of Old Town Coffee Co. while reading the paper and watching the many lucky dogs also enjoying their Sunday-morning outing.
The tempting array of foodstuffs includes fruit and vegetables, flowers, dates, nuts, olive oil, and artisanal bread.
The Certified Farmers' Market will operate Sundays 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m through May. If you go, check out the darling stationary shop, Paper Paper Stationers, a boutique awash in appealing cards and gifts operated by longtime friends, Linda Wright and Karen Steinhart. They just celebrated their grand opening last week.
