Take the Subway

I once was working with a couple who were relocating from Oregon to my home area of Gaston County, NC. We spent many hours together over one weekend touring homes before they had to fly back home, as they would not be able to return until they were actually moving. On our second day together, after we had established a comfortable rapport, the wife said they had noticed something that they considered peculiar about many of the homes here. "Why do so many of the homes have screened-in porches?" I explained that our climate is very amenable to sitting on the porch for morning coffee or just relaxing outdoors in the evening, but in the warmer months the screening provides some very desirable privacy from insects.

Anyway, so much for real estate talk, this post is really about the screened porch...

My brother-in-law was visiting from PA last week. He was born and raised in Dallas, NC. In fact, he grew up in the very house where we were hanging out late into the evening telling lies stories with a big group of family members on the screened porch. The topic had turned to service, or lack thereof, we had seen in restaurants. I mentioned that we often walked "down to the Subway" from our office. My brother-in-law was shocked! "Charlotte has a Subway?!". I replied, "Only about one on every block." He was just stunned to learn this amazing fact. Everyone was staring at him like he had lost his mind until it finally dawned on him that we were talking about RESTAURANTS. We all had a good laugh and he must have mentioned taking the subway a dozen times over the subsequent days.

OK, so maybe you just had to be there. If you had a screened porch maybe you could be. :)

...and yes, Charlotte does have a Subway. Many of them, in fact.

As for the riding kind, Honolulu plans to build a "subway" on the cheap...it will be above ground rather than under.  I think I can hear the noise already.

Richard - Charlotte has indeed also begun to expand its mass transit offerings with an above ground "light rail" line. The project was very controverial due to the expense and perceived lack of need, but now that the southern spur has been in operation for awhile ridership is reported to have exceeded projections.
