Inspection Photo of the Day ~ DIY Wiring...

DIY wiring kits come in all sizes and shapes from the novice do-it-your-selfer all the way up to the contractors grade kit. These kits come fully equipped with all the necessary tools, wiring and other gizmos one needs to completely and almost instantly tune any electrical circuit for smoke without really trying
.

Take note of the nasty gash in the wiring sheathing done by this DIY unhandy man. This was most likely caused  by using the wrong size drill bit in the DIY wiring kit. Because the unhandy dandy drilled the hole too small, the sheathing was damaged when the semi-unskilled tradesman tugged and tugged to get the last bit if wiring through the hole. Tsk! Tsk!

And, to make matters worse, the DIY unhandy dandy forgot to use the roll of handy-dandy electrical tape included in the DIY wiring kit to fix the boo boo but didn't. Tsk! Tsk!

After the laundry room burns to a crisp, maybe they will get a professional to do it right next time. Ya think?

Still think that you don't need an inspection when you are purchasing real estate? Guess again...

I agree, a home inspection should be a requirement for all real estate transactions.  One has to wonder why they're not, considering the lives that it would save.  The lenders would are trying to pass the buck onto the appraiser, and I don't know many home appraisers who are also home inspectors.  If the home inspection organizations had any clout, they'd have made it happen years ago.

Yikes. Won't be doing any DIY wiring in my home! It amazes me that some would opt out of an inspection. I use them in every transaction.

Michael, I always push for a home inspection and provide good reasons why one should be done on properties.

Michael we both know the importance of the home inspection. It is hard for me to imagine in todays world someone purchasing a home and not having an inspection.

Michael,

If you did that yourself, I do not think you should be so darn proud of the job.

I have been running into a lot of DIY wiring lately. They think it's okay until they start the house on fire.

Hi Michael, it is very rare that we see an offer nowadays without a condition of having a home inspection.  Your post should convince everyone to have an inspection.

Now that's a quality job!

And reason #268 why I always insist my clients have a professional home inspection.
