Google launches yet another new tool - Google Sidewiki

Google Sidewiki

I just learned of an interesting new feature by Google called Sidewiki www.google.com/sidewiki  It is a new feature of the Google Toolbar (currently available on IE and Firefox surprisingly not yet on Chrome).

Essentially this can create a sidebar wiki entry for every website which makes it available for public comment and feedback.  This creates a very unique new realm of social networking opportunties and threats!

Useful features:

  • include learning from others that have been there before you;
  • customer satisfaction ratings;
  • if you have a great reputation, it can really work for you since it can become a rating system like Ebay has without having to go to third party rating sites;
  • you can learn what consumers like and dislike about your website so you can keep improving it.
  • You have to log in to post a comment making it a little bit more credible (although you can create a new email in a minute for this purpose);

Possible threats include:

  • Social sabatoge - competitors posting data derailing your true image;
  • How will you deal with that impossible to please client with unrealistic expectations;
  • How do you keep people (possibly competitiors from advertising on your sidewiki?;
  • Google will determine which order these Wiki's show up via some undisclosed algorythm;
  • Can a company require it's employess to post great things about itself to increase their rankings?

As I get comments on this, I will try to update the useful and threats bullets as people think about new ways this can be used.

Just when you think they can't come up with anything else for you to decide is helpful/hurtful, useful/useless, worthwhile/worthless...my first impression is the BAD stuff that could happen here. How can that be a good thing? I guess we shall see!

I can't really stand too many toolbars, so I think I'll skip on this one, but you offer some great pros and cons.

One thought that came to mind was whether the items can be deleted - blatant sabotage is never positive, and though I wouldn't expect it, ya just never know.

Great share, Jim!

Hi Jim,

It sounds interesting and I love anything new that will help my rankings.  I would think that you could delete the comments if they are negative.  It is definitely worthwhile checking  out as we need all the help we can get these days.  Has anyone tried that Google University yet?  I think the course was $99.00 and it is about all the free technology available to us through Google that you can use  to help your business without paying constant fees.  I keep getting it in my email.   Thanks for the tip.

Melanie,

I had never heard of Google University but I have jokes recently that is where I am getting my MBA from.  Thanks to Google, I can know about anything given internet access.  We just need to retain critical thinking skills since just because it is online doesn't make it true.  Anyone with a similar degree from Google U understands the importance of getting a minor from Snoops.com and urbanlegends.com

Hi Jim,

I agee 100%.  I always have my thinking cap on and one thing that helps me is to  always assume it is a scam going in so you do your research, then you are covered.  Ha!  Google has never let me down, however, now I am in info overload with all the social media going on such as Twitter, Facebook, My Space, You Tube, Realtor listing websites, etc. It is hard to keep up.  I am lucky I have the time to actually get out and sell the properties.  I will check out Snoops.com and urbanlegends as well. Thanks!

I hope agents and brokers will let me know their thoughts on how to implement this new resource so I can update this blog and cover it when I teach my EPRO workshops for NAR.  If you are interested in getting your EPRO, contact me for a discount coupon code!

I think Google Sidewiki can be useful in many ways by creating converation around a page or place on the web. I also think that if Google is not very careful the spammers will flood it with crap that will make it virtually useless.

Jim - Great, I don't know when all this new stuff will end.  I am also finding it hard to stay on top of blogging, facebook, AR, Linkedin, twitter, my website, etc., and then all the new things that just keep coming out.  You never really know whether you will like something unless you try it, so I will at least have to take a look.

Sounds like an interesting concept. I use a lot of Google tools, but sidewiki has not been one of them.
