Last Day To Text Legally While Driving A Car In Maryland

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage 531132

It sounds kind of bizarre to state it like that, considering how dangerous texting while driving really is. Tomorrow, the law takes effect that drivers can no longer text while driving. It is still legal to read a text message, but sending one could get you a ticket.

With the traffic we have here in the Suburban Maryland area, any distraction while driving is just plain stupid. As a Realtor who spends a lot of time in the car, I see dumb mistakes being made every day by drivers talking on cell phones.

I believe that some day, talking on cell phones will be banned entirely, but not yet. It took the State of Maryland legislators this long just to ban texting while driving. Good grief, why?

If you just have to get that last text message in...do it today. Better yet, don't do it at all...its probably not that important anyway.

I agree with you!  Why is it taking so long to get these things passed?  Common sense should tell us it is dangerous.  Now I wonder though how is the officer going to prove this?  If they allow you to read, don't you think everyone that gets pulled over will just be reading their text messages?  I believe the government is looking into banning the use of cell phones in automobiles, I saw it somewhere but can't remember exactly which blog.

They were talking about how dangerous this is on the news this morning.  It needs to be outlawed nationally.

I just saw someone texting while driving a motor cycle the other day...

What ARE they thinking?

Good afternoon Richard,

Will they be stopping the talking on the phone without a hands free device too?  I agree that texting while driving is extremely dangerous and needs to be stopped.

I don't think that I would try to text when I was driving.

Good luck and success.

Don,

Maryland hasn't progressed that far yet. The legislators talk these things to death before they finally pass something that is just common sense.

I wonder how they'll enforce this.  Excellent idea.  I have to admit, I've caught myself more than once doing it.  Stupid.  Very stupid.

Susan,

I wonder if they have an "Italian Princess" exemption?

Glad to see texting and driving go away.  Now if we could only get rid of reading and driving, or shaving and driving, or putting on make-up and driving, etc.  It is so hard to legislate stupidity.

Rich, there should always be an Italian exemption.  For everything!  As far as driving,  we probably shouldn't even talk to a passenger as we talk with our hands!  My kids are always reminding me to put my hands back on the wheel!!  lol!

There is no reason to text while driving unless you want to kill yourself or someone else. Just pull over for 30 seconds, write the text and be done.
