How To Build Trusting Relationships In Social Media

By
Real Estate Agent with Cascade Sotheby's International Realty

One huge mistake that many people make in Social Media is trying to personify themself as perfect.  Let me ask you a question.  Who do you trust more, a knowledgeable person who doesn't appear to have a single fault or a knowledgeable person who is willing to admit they make a mistake now and then?

If you said the knowledgeable person who makes an occasional error, your being honest.  That raises a question.  Why would you choose the knowledgeable person with some flaws over a perfect person?

The answer is simple...because there is no perfect person in today's world and deep down we all know it.  Why then are we as real estate professionals sometimes afraid to give the public a more authentic view of who we are?

The reason I bring this up is because when it comes to Social Media, that is an essential element to getting more business from the online world.  If we come off as someone perfect, devoid of any kind of unique personality, with no shortcomings, we cannot hope to attract people to a place where they truly trust us.

That doesn't mean that we come off as crass, egotistical or selfish, but merely that we allow for the fact that we have genuine opinions or admit to our own mistakes at times.  When we are willing to admit where we might have made a mistake, people see us as real people, just like themselves.   Of course we need to have the knowledge of real estate that the public is trusting us to have, but we do not pretend to be something we're not.

In my own case, I realized that I didn't know as much about Social Media as I should.  I also recognized that whether I like it or not, Social Media is, and will continue to play an important part in our Profession.  The old school of real estate is just that...old.   Today people are interacting with each other on a level that was simply not possible a few short years ago.  To ignore it, is to lose business.  None of us can afford to lose business in our current economic climate.

The lesson that I was taught by my personal Social Media mentor, is that we make use of this new medium in a way that is believable and reflects who we are as people.  Don't ever be afraid to show the online world who you are as a person and what you stand for.  Again, you want to demonstrate your professionalism, but you want to do so as an expert with real thoughts, feelings and passions.  You may make mistakes along the way, but by showing people you're not afraid to be wrong, they will see you as a believable person rather than an image that they cannot connect with on an emotional level.

There is a great quote I remember hearing from an expert that said, "In a virtual world where nothing is real, people crave authenticity."  He went on to say that if you are passionate, truthful and someone who is willing to take the lead by uniting a group of people for a common cause...success will have no choice but follow you.  This is called Personal Branding.

But many agents lack the confidence or 'know how' to Brand themselves in this new online Social Medium.  How do you gain the know how and confidence you need to become a leader in the new era of Social Media?  Stay tuned for the next post.

Tarris:

I am new to this social media approach, and I find that can be challenging. Selecting what to say and what not too. How much info do you give out or not.

Barbara - To answer your question, I really felt totally lost with social media and had been looking for a good social media training system when I came across Robert Grant.  His free videos had so much great information in them that I wanted the actual course.  The online classroom really helped me to get my focus and have things finally click into place in how to utilize social media to develop myself as a brand especially for Facebook.  I had gone through other social media training but they sort of focused on how to get lots of Fans and Friends rather than strategies for building long term relationships that will draw the caliber of people you want to do business with.  I learned that most business people's mindset is completely wrong when it comes to Social Media.  If you decide to go with personal training (as in hiring someone local to sit down and teach you) be sure and ask them, what they can teach you.  If they focus on getting lots of fans, friends, subscribers, I would suggest looking elsewhere.  Robert Grant focuses on Facebook but his strategies really apply to any social media platform you want to get involved with.  I wish you the best in taming the Social Media Tiger!!!

Lorraine & Loretta - One tip I can give is to focus on people's problems, showing genuine interest and letting them see you're personality as you help them.  Don't be afraid to be yourself as you demonstrate your professional talent.  Yes it might help if you are a dynamic speaker or talented writer, but what is going to draw people to you the most is allowing your personality to shine through.  Don't be afraid to let people know how you feel about something and what you get excited about or things that are a big concern to you and why.  Where appropriate, share with others the problems you came up against, how they made you feel at the time and then how you found the solution and can help others with the same issues.  We all have stories that can be engaging, funny, sad, or even frustrating that help people to bond with us as real people.  One last tip is to find other people within the social media realm that you personally tune into and really examine what it is that attracts you to them.  You can emulate what you learn from them and incorporate your own personality into your chosen social media platform.

Traci - You're right, Branding is something that is critical to get a following within the realm of social media.  I think it's hard sometimes for us agents to really focus on the 'Brand' we want to create for ourselves.  I'll be covering that more in my next post.

Lisa - Thanks for the compliment, I hope it helps.

It also helps to just be yourself. I find the best places to meet people (everybody is a potential client) are the niche websites. For instance, I belong to S60R.com. This is a forum for people that own Volvo S60R. Since there were only 14,000 cars imported a total of 4 years that club isn't really big, but everyone there is focused and has something in common that they are passionate about.

I think one of the problems that people have when they begin to network online is that they join groups that are too broad in scope. It sounds like you have a good grip on this too.

Very good philosophy on personal branding, Tarris. Online connections are about more than just business, and agents who recognize that will develop a loyal following.

Ryan - That is a great suggestion.  By the way, I rented a Volvo C70 convertible in the French Riviera a few years ago and LOVED it!

John - It sounds like you have a good grasp of the medium.  You are certainly right, those agents who recognize 'Branding' will gain a following and more income.

I think I get more business of 15 second videos of my family out just having fun than I do my actual business posts to Activerain, twitter has certainly brought me a lot of visitors to my blogs, but the videos are what has been bringing the business lately. But, without the blog to back it up, they wouldn't have stayed.

Thanks Todd for your comments.  I think that's great using video.  It is definitely underutilized and can be a great source of traffic.  I'll have to check out your Blog and family video.
