Beginning October 24, 2009, all 760 area code users will be required to dial a 1+area code to other users in the same 760 or 442 area code from their landlines. If you are calling from your mobile phone you may either dial the 1 + the area code or just the area code and number.
The 442 area code is being added beginning November 21, 2009 to the area served by the 760 area code due to the lack of new numbers available.
If you don not use the new dialing procedure, your call will not be completed and a recording will instruct you to hang up and dial again.
A few points to this change:
- Your telephone number, including area code will not change
- If it is a local call now, it will continue a local call regardless of the number of digits dialed
- The price of a call, coverage area, and other rates and services will not change due to the overlay
- You can still dial just 3 digits to reach 911, as well as 211,311, 411, 511, 611, 711, and 811
You should begin changing any stored numbers that will be affected by this change immediately in your cell phones and any other programs that store your numbers. It is also suggested that you begin using the new procedures BEFORE October 24, 2009.
