More Drought Concerns for Huntsville and Madison

Yesterday, we got a little bit of rain. It was the longest I have seen it rain in quite some time. However, we are still far below where we should be at this point in the year. There are concerns about water restrictions in our area. Huntsville and Madison have not placed a restriction on water usage but they have asked residents to be conservative in their water usage. They are asking for a voluntary conservation of residents. I encourage everyone to be mindful of their water usage so we can all get through this dry season we are experiencing.
Madison County is one of 19 North Alabama counties that have been declared in an exceptional drought area. I have read reports that this drought has been 3 years in the making and it may continue through the summer. Just as it took time to develop, it will take time to reverse. Below you will see a chart provided by the National Weather Service that outlines the normal rainfall (in red) versus the total rainfall received (in blue) for Huntsville and the Tennessee Valley area.
As we continue through this rough summer, please remember that although we are not in a water restriction right now, we can all do our part to keep our conditions steady. Please conserve your water usage. Even little things help such as limiting dishwasher use, washing cars, and watering lawns. PLEASE remember that dry conditions like these can also increase fire danger. So remember the Alabama Forestry Commission is calling for no burning of trash, no unauthorized fireworks use, and no major campfires or bonfires.
With the hot, dry days ahead, I ask that you please remember to take care of yourself. Drink plenty of fluids, try to stay out of direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day, and don't forget to use your sunblock. Also, be sure to watch out for children and the elderly as rough conditions like these can be especially brutal for them. Be safe this summer and remember your water usage. Lets conserve our own usage before someone else does it for us!
