Beyond the Gray Door: Identity Theft Deterrent

Is your mail secure when it's in your mailbox?  Mine wasn't.  But it is now.  Over the weekend, I had aGray Door residential mailbox locking system installed.

Harry Kalenberg of Plano, Texas, invented a mechanism to deter thieves from stealing mail from your mailbox.  The device fits inside standard mailboxes.  There is a slot so the mail carrier can insert the mail, but a key is required to open the device to remove the mail.  Harry not only invented the device, but he makes, markets, and even installs them himself.

If you're interested in getting a Gray Door insert for your mailbox (they also come in a square shape), contact Harry at 800-680-7350.  His website is www.mailboxsafety.com. The cost, installation and tax included, is $75.  Peace of mind: priceless.

For those outside the Dallas/Fort Worth area, see Harry's website for information on how you can get a Gray Door, too.

The Postal Service here is doing away with individual mailboxes and going to secured cluster boxes. We had just bought a real nice, custom, securred mailbox when we were notified that we now had one of the little cluster boxes and that mail would not be delivered to individual mail boxes anymore.

Hi Lorrie... this is a GREAT idea and a worthwhile investment.  I think I'll write a post explaining why, from a very personal perspective!

Harry came to our networking group with his invention - very clever and highly  useful.  It can be retrofitted into an existing mailbox too.

Jim:  Where I used to live, the mailman still came to the box at the front door to deliver the mail.  Now I have a box at the curb.  I miss the good old days!

Steve:  Ut oh!

Karen:  Harry's a gem!

Lorrie - We've also seen secured individual mailboxes, but here in Phoenix, most of the subdivision have locked cluster mailboxes...great for your incoming mail, but no dropbox for outgoing mail.

I love the fact that it fits inside a standard mailbox. I just don't like the look of the new boxy ones that they came out with that are secure. I would much rather have this, tell him to come up here and sell them.

Hey, Todd!  You can have one mailed to you, but you'd have to install it yourself.  Harry keeps pretty busy here in Dallas.
