SUCCOTH...What is IT?

SUKKOT is a funny word to the English speaking Western Hemisphere because it is a Hebrew word but one that would readily be understood in Israel.  It is also the season by which they celebrated last week.

What is SUKKOT?  If you look in the book of Leviticus 23:36-39, you will see that God actually dictates the Hebrew children to observe 7 feasts, the last one of the year being SUKKOT.

The other 6 feasts are:homes in kingwood texas, edward bachman realtor, porter homes for sale, new caney homes for sale, kingwood texas relocation

1.  Passover

2.  Unleaven Bread

3.  First Fruits

4.  Shavuot (Feast of Weeks)

5.  Rosh Hashanah (New Year)

6.  Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement)

7.  Sukkot  (Lev 23:39-43)

SUKKOT was fundamentally a feast to remember their deliverance from 400 years of slavery in Egypt and to remember who their God was that delivered them.  It was a time to remember by living in a temporary shelter for a period of 8 days.  It would be a small shelter where the family would eat together, pray together and sing and study together for awhile each day.

Note that Jesus himself also celebrated this feast in Jerusalem.  It bears much significance in a few different regards.  I will name only two.

1.  In John 7:37-38 Jesus declared that "If any man is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture say, from his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water!"

Earthen vessel, sukkot kingwood texas, edward bachman realtorThis bears some importance because during this feast, water was drawn from the pool of Siloam which was "living water" and  a huge parade of celebration carried the water back to the temple where it was then poured into two pitchers on each side of the altar while the people shouted, "pour it out, pour it all out."    This was an appeal to God to send rain for the harvest.

It was also the time in which Jesus declared that He was that living water.

2. In John 8:12 Jesus made another declaration during SUKKOT.   "I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life!"   menorah kingwood texas sukkot, homes for sale kingwood texas,

The Temple Mount was the highest point of the city of Jerusalem.  In the temple area, a menorah  of 75 feet high was lit at night which illuminated the courtyard area.  This the bowls on this massive torch each held about 30 gallons of oil.  The wick was the discarded robes of the high priest.  As it was lit at night, it could be seen for many miles through the villages and byways.

A person could literally spend a lifetime studying the Feasts as they are replete with prophetic pictures of the Messiah, but in this short synopsis, I focus on the fact that the SUKKAH was a temporary dwelling place which reminds us that our bodies and this world are all temporary dwellings and that one day, our permanent dwelling will be ushered in by the Messiah.

HAPPY SUKKOT!!!

I always enjoy hearing about traditions from other cultures. I once joined a jewish family for Passover - it was absolutely fascinating seeing all of the different customs and hearing about the reasons for them.

Julia...fascinating it surely is.  I have learned more about the roots of Christianity in the past few years by studying Jewish Tradition than by any other source.
