About the Encinitas Schoolhouse and Historical Society Building: "This restored Schoolhouse is the oldest  building within the City of Encinitas, a city made up of five distinct communities. When  the Hammond family arrived from Macclesfield, England in 1883, they increased  the town's population to twenty-two people.  A school was needed for the Hammond children and others, so Edward Hammond and his son, Ted, set forth to build one large enough to accommodate eight grades."

"Meanwhile, the Encinitas School District held a bond election and twelve settlers unanimously approved a $600 bond. School Bond was approved in 1882, and building construction was begun in 1883. This bond money for the one-teacher school paid for the childrens' wood slab tables and redwood benches. For drinking water, a cistern was dug. If the cistern ran dry, water had to be carried from the railroad well at Cottonwood Creek." (From the Encinitas Historical Society Website)

Melissa:  I would describe this building with two words.  Probably more, but right now just two.  Gorgeous and quaint.  Very nice.  It looks more "New-Englandy" to me... than something in California.  Very peaceful.

Hi Melissa. Pictures like this as well as of steeples really fascinate me. I'm glad that they have restored it and maintained it. ~ Lana

Hi Melissa, I love old buildings and learning the history.  This old school house is so well preserved, it's hard to believe it is already over 126 years old -- not very old for back East - but old for the West. What a treasure for Encinitas.

Mary:  Hey... I'm 126 years old, too.  I wish someone would restore me.  Maybe I could get declared an "Historical Realtor" to qualify ?

LOL@ Karen Anne - First we'd have to do an Historical study, see how many 126 year old Realtors there are -- I don't think there would be many, so you might have a good chance at the designation LOL!!!
