Tougher Standards for Realtors in California

By

Some of you may have heard that California is increasing the requirements for real estate agents.  There will no longer be a conditional license.  Rather, agents will now have to meet all of the requirements from the outset.  Will that help the standard of professionalism and knowledge of Realtors?  Maybe.

But let's be real, it is still way to easy to get a real estate license in this state, and unfortunately it is recognized by the public, which in turn makes it difficult for even the best qualified realtors out there.

As an attorney, and a real estate broker, I think that the requirements for real estate agents should be similar, although not as tough, as passing the bar.  While I don't expect the state to require a four year college degree, followed by 3 years of graduate school, followed by a 3 day exam (i.e. to become a licensed attorney), a few more hurdles would not hurt.  It would help those entering the profession, the public, and the qualified Realtors as well.

At least it appears we are headed in the right direction.  Small steps, right?  How are the requirements in other states?
