Why Move to Gig Harbor, WA?

Gig Harbor Bay

When people ask me "Why Move to Gig Harbor, WA?" I can list dozens of reasons.  The small town activities, the proximity to Seattle, the Pacific Ocean, the Olympic Peninsula, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. St. Helens, the abundance of outdoor activities, the natural beauty of the Puget Sound, the people, and yes, even the weather.  But that's because I've been here for several years now and have come to think of it as one of the best places in the world to live.  So I tell them the story of how I decided to move to Gig Harbor, WA from the Midwest.

In 2002 I was ready to leave Kansas (although not quite as abruptly as Dorothy did...)  My youngest daughter was graduating from high school and we were college-shopping on both coasts.  As we wandered around Portland, OR I took the opportunity to talk to several shopkeepers to learn more about the area.  (As I'm originally from just north of Portland, ME I had thought Portland, OR might be a good fit for me.)  One of the shopkeepers insisted that if I liked the lifestyle and scenery in Maine, then I should definitely move to Gig Harbor, WA.  I thanked her, left the store and promptly forgot the name of the little town in Washington that she had mentioned.

The next day we headed for Bellingham to look at Western Washington University.  Again, I spent some time shopping and talking to people to find out about their beautiful town.  Everyone had great things to say about Bellingham, but as I was getting a cup of coffee, a woman overheard my conversation and joined in.  She said she had a great suggestion for me - guess what it was.   "Move to Gig Harbor, WA" she told me.  "You'll fall in love with it the minute you cross the Tacoma Narrows Bridge."   Wow, twice in one weekend - I'll remember the name of that little town now.

We had time before our flight back to Kansas to take a little detour, so after finding a map detailed enough to show Gig Harbor, over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge we went.   And you know what?  They were right.  So I made the move to Gig Harbor, WA that spring and am still living happily ever after.  Biking, hiking, boating, kayaking, fishing, skiing, golfing, and frequenting the local wine shops.

Our local bumper sticker says it all.... Life is Good!  Gig Harbor

It says a lot for Gig Harbor when someone from such diverse states as Kansas and Maine moves here and loves it
