Watch Out for Craigslist

By
Real Estate Agent with Florida Sun & Surf Realty Group

I recently put new rentals on the market, much to my surprise my phone started ringing off the hook. In a weeks time I had about 10 calls refering to a property I had put on the MLS but these calls were saying the property was $200 less than I had listed it. I inquired to see where they had seen the house and everyone said Craigslist. I quickly became a member trying to see who had the property listed. Much to my surprise all the photos I had on the Multiple Listing Services were on this craigslist ad. I inquired as a perspective and quicly received an email with wiring information and a really low price on my property. I was furious, reported as fraud and contacted an attorney. So today my advise is even if you don't advertise on Craigslist do your homework and make sure your listing is not being used by someone else. I explained to many of the callers that it was a scam and although they were understanding they of course were not in the price range of the property I was trying to rent.

Jessica - Ouch that hurts.  Sounds like someone is just trying to run a scam.  Hopefully someone calls who can and does purchase your listing at the correct price.

I place my listings on Craigslist myself with some success.  I definitely get inquiries from Craigslist and have even wound up working with a couple who inquired from Craigslist.

Maybe you should consider placing your ads there as well.

I find Craigslist is good but yes you definitely have to watch out for the scammers. I've never heard of your incident happening though, that is pretty scary. I hope Craiglist did something to get that person off the board.

I agree I have put some listings on Craigslist as some have given some type of revenue. It is sad that so many people are naive to think a property in that condition will go for the price they saw. I guess if I put the property on Craigslist someone will be less likely to duplicate it.Thanks for your input.

Craigslist is plagued with scammers.  if you use it, and I have, you must constantly check your listings and make sure you check your listing has not been lifted and altered. Amazing how many scam artists are always thinking of new ways to rip off the unsuspecting customer. Thanks Jessica for posting this heads up!
