Fisher Island, the private residential community only accessible by private ferry and helicopter, is lookingP1110341.JPG for options for dock space for their daily barge service that carries food, household supplies and construction materials across the bay.  This daily barge is considered the island's "life line" since it provides residents with everyday necessities and according to Mark James, president of the Fisher Island Community Association, the barge is "essential for our survival".

Fisher Island had a 10-year lease with The Port of Miami, and after not being billed for some years, settled on $1.135 million in port fees.  The Island is now looking for alternatives and has a number of different options at a lower cost, according to the Miami Herald's Article, Fisher Island agrees to $1.135M port fees.

Fisher Island is a private island, once home of The Vanderbilts and later developed as an exclusive luxurious community.  Amenities in the island include the Fisher Island Hotel and Resort, A par-35 nine-hole golf course designed by architect P. B. Dye, an 18 court tennis center, a spa and fitness center, 2 world-class deep water marinas, 8 restaurants, A commercial center with a high-end gourmet market and shopping, a polo field, private beaches, The Fisher Island Day School (from Pre-K to 5th grade), large playground for kids of all ages, post office, on-island fire and emergency station, Seaplane, Car-Ferry and helicopter access 24-hours a day.

Ines - sounds like a real intesting place - thanks for sharing. I don't think I could live on a place that I couldn't jump in the car and just go - unless it was a weekend retreat (hmm now that sounds good! :-))

Cyndee - it's a great place, but you need to like that lifestyle.  I feel the same way about the car issue - but the island is pretty autonomous.  It's one of those GREAT MIAMI PLACES .....Hey! another Miamism!

What an interesting piece Ines.  I wouldn't mind being able to escape to a place like that now & then.  And I did check out the famous residents, thanks for sharing all of this.

Ines, I had not heard of Fishers Island before.  I don't know that I would like to live in a place that I could not just jump in my car and drive to where ever I want to.  The whole Island thing sounds nice, but I don't think it would be for me.

Steve - the greatest part about Fisher Island is that its residents really live there, it's not just a vacation spot - although it is for some.

David - you can say THAT again!

George - the lifestyle is so unique, and not for everyone, that's what makes it what it is.

Sally - you DO live far away, but what you tell us about Hawaii is unbelievable - The Vanderbilts had a private home on this private island with a golf course before it was developed....pretty cool.

Monika- to tell you the truth, I was surprised to see anything under $1M in the MLS - it probably faces the port of Miami with a huge hammering thing thumping next to you all day.

Ines, if I am not mistaken, Fisher Island has one of the HIGHEST per capita wealth rankings in the US.  It is a little like Disney World there, every blade of grass just so.  Our general contracting firm, Papiillon Redevelopment, has two jobs going on there right now.

Janie - you are right, a couple of years ago it was THE highest per capita, I know they dropped a couple of spots, but it's still up there.  There IS a better side of the island, if you can believe that.  Just recently I shoed a $1.5 M unit overlooking the port that was all but desirable.  People buy Fisher Island for the lifestyle and the privacy.
