ZIP IT!Sounds like a song from the 70's, doesn't it?!   (Colour My World)  I guess I'm dating myself, aren't I?  Anyway, I digress...

Staying away from controaversial posts--mostly political--has been my personal 'policy' since starting here in the Rain.  Our dear Jennifer Monroe sets the record straight about members who use this platform as a policical one or even just a place to rant!  And, hey, it's okay to 'rant' but, being rude to other members while doing so, does absolutely NOTHING to put you in a positive light with other members OR the public

Don't forget that the public can see what we write here and believe me, you're being watched...and your'e being judged.  Think about what you're saying and how you're coming across before you put your fingers to the keyboard!

Your comments are a reflection of you, me and our entire community!   Thanks,  Jennifer--we needed a lesson in zipping it and you put it SO well!

… That you spend hours and hours of every day posting and commenting on political and social posts that have no potential for advancing my home buying or selling endeavor?

… That you are sarcastic, contentious, an extremist, a know-it-all or just downright hateful? Because when I read your posts and comments to others on this forum, I am truly appalled.

… That you are not really the professional that you hold yourself up to be? Instead, you spend your day more focused upon shoving your ego into overdrive the moment a new controversy arises?

… That you will treat the potential buyer, seller, agent, or inspector of my property with total disdain and prejudice if she is gay, muslim, a republican, or fat?

The more I think about, the more I DO want to know these things about you. Before it’s too late!

I am your client, your referral source, your colleague and everyone who is looking for a Real Estate Professional. I happened upon your link while searching the internet to learn more about YOU. What I found is that you are simply one among a parade of losers who deplete the productive hours of your day in a worthless discussion about religion, politics and rag magazine banter.

I don’t mind if you engage in a healthy debate now and again, but I plan to run, not walk to the next professional who presents themselves in the manner to which I’d like to be represented. Fortunately, you have plenty of competition. Their quality posts and congenial commentary here have really impressed me.

Think about that when you next log on.

Debe, Like you, I do refrain from posting topics in the political arena, but I have been guilty as such. When I do, I make these members only and keep them few and far between.

I wil post political commentary for "members only."  I won't do it in th public arena. Though it is obvious by looking at facebook and twitter what side of the political spectrum I come from. Personally, I think much of the problem is that we have so many serious and intractable issues plaguing us right now that people need to discuss and vent.  The venue does matter though.

I stay away from politics...I try to NOT read the hardcore political or religious stuff here because I guess I don't care.

I also don't want that to color my opinion of that person.  Occasionally I get sucked in...

Michael:  Good policy!  And, I do, on occasion comment on one but, never on one that I 'oppose' the original author's viewpoint--I've seen too many make a 'nice' comment, objecting to the author's post and be BLASTED by the author and others.  It's just not worth getting into a heated debate here in a public forum--even if it is members only!  We've got better things to do, right?!

Ruthmarie:  Exactly--as I said to Michael, it's just not worth having a heated, unfriendly 'discussion' here on AR!

Fernando:  Now, THAT would have been a good title!!  Ditto!

Maureen:  Me too!  Sometimes I read a members only post about a political issue and, you're right, my whole perspective of either the author or at least ONE of the commentors is changed forever--and it's not ever for the 'good!'

Penny:  You're so right!  I do like members sharing a bit of their personal side here but, non-debatable personal sides is best!!

Debe,

Read Jennifer again and you will see that she comes no better than any political post out there. She really doesn't.

And I do not think we all are the same color and should be coming as purified real estate professionals in some very general way.

WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT. I do not care about a profeesional as much as I woul care about a personality. I want to feel comfortable with a person. can it be a knowledgeable real estate professional with who it does not click.

If I am a consumer, and I go to AR, I assume that everyone is a professional, so I really choose a personality. And As a blogger I love when people call me BECAUSE  they liked the personality.

I think the problem here is really being agitated, disrespectful and plain rude. But disrespectful people are still disrespectful and rude, no matter what they write about.

The only difference is that unfortunately we see it more when we read or talk about politics or religion.

I will fight to the death for  any members right to post political, religious, dog photo, cat video .... original content on ActiveRain... as long as they are members and following the Guidelines, it's their blog, their choice.

I just need to avoid the majority of the political posts because I do form opinions.

Just because politics is not my cup of tea doesn't mean NO one should write about it...

I posted a current events post about Columbus at some point this year and a local member ( a real estate agent)  posted a very political comment on my blog about an elected official.  It got deleted, my blog, my choice.  He can write disparaging political content all over his blog.  His blog his choice.

Hi June!  I don't think that Jennifer meant for everyone to 'zip it,' nor did I.  It was meant to be directed at those who are simply rude and nasty instead of engaging in healthy debate.  YOU, my friend, are certainly not being asked to 'zip it,' we WANT your comments!

Jon:  I think that Jennifer's point was not that you or I provide an opposing opinion but, rather the manner in which it is presented.  You and I don't leave mean, nasty comments on others' blogs--we leave heart-felt, insightful comments--whether we agree with the author or other commentors or not.  The problem recently has been that some members are leaving hateful, sarcastic or just downright rude comments, leaving everyone feeling uncomfortable.  I have to say that when someone writes a nasty remark on someone elses blog, I don't have the same respect that I had for them before--and, you'd best believe I won't be sending business their way, should I have a client for their area!  I don't want them being rude to my referral if they have opposing political views.  And, you're absolutely right--we do see it more with religion and politics so, that's why I try to steer clear of those topics--at least in commenting!

Hi Maureen:  I believe that members can write about whatever they'd like as well.  I do, however, think the 'nasty' comments--just as you had on yours--are unwarranted and should be more carefully monitered by each, individual member.  Will you ever refer business to the agent who left that remark that you deleted on your post?  Probably not because, he was inappropriate and you'd never want him making those types of comments to your referred clients.  I think that the nasty, rude comments have begun rearing their ugly heads recently and Jen was just on a rant about that--not about subject matter.  At least, that was MY interpretation and the message that I wanted to convey with the re-blog!

As always, thanks for sharing your opinion--it's certainly valued here on my blog!! :-)

Very true, we do need to be mindful of the public and how we are viewed by them as well as our fellow realtors.  Thanks.

I read the political post for amusement only. It seems like they have tendency of going south very quickly. Most of what is being stated on them is just the same old stuff I can watch on TV. Very few new thoughts or opinions. Just regurgitated sound bites. It's not for me.

Debe,

I think AR is very big (virtually) and that we all find our own places to go and stay. Like in real life, we go to some and do not go to others. We all know that Police comes more often to some than to others... I really do not think that it can be different.

And, of course, two things govern it: our behaviour, and the rules that are in place. Hopefully. we can be civil, and the rules are clear and enforceable.

Thank you

Don:  You just never know who's watching you!!

BB:  Same here--I have very strong convictions, both pertaining to religion and politics but, to me, this is just not the forum for me to engage in negative conversation with other members!  I prefer to keep to my grandmother's saying, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all!"

Jon:  You definitely set a glowing example of how to treat others here in the RAIN--I just can't keep up with you!  I agree, we need to police ourselves and be mindful and respectful of other members--it's a reflection upon US in the public's eye.

Debe, like TLW I read them for my own amusement. Rarely do I comment and usually after a lot of comments the whole thing starts to irritate me and I just leave. People forget that the words, once out there, don't go away. I'm all about your grandmother's saying!
