We're selling space and light!

Most buyers like light and open areas rather than closed in little rooms that are dark.  Even in larger rooms buyers still seem to prefer the light rather than a very dark atmosphere.  Decor recycles and we can look back at the dark beams, dark tung and groove paneling, heavy draperies at the windows and basically dark houses in the seventies.  Over the years people have painted the beams and even paneling in some cases to lighten the interiors of their homes.

Today we're seeing the cabinetry going from the light oak that was so prevalent for several years in the late 80's & 90's, back to a medium brown "pecan" shade of finish.  Even so, don't make your house too dark inside if you want it to be appealing to the masses of people for re-sale.  If you plan on living there forever, then the decor doesn't matter.

Light from the windows is still very important as people continue to use the wooden blinds and a touch of softness and warmth by using a valance of some sort.

Dark paint colors can also affect perspective buyers.  Many rooms with dark or intense paint tend to look smaller than a room of the same size with a lighter shade of paint.  Earth tones are wonderful and "feel good" colors.  They tend to make it easier for buyers to move right in with their colors because most colors go with the browns, taupes, greens and beige tones of nature - - just like trees and plants coordinating with beautiful colored flowers.  A buyer can bring in their bright colored pillows and accent chairs and they'll usually work with the earth tone walls and carpet.

Just remember, for resale, light is always better than dark!
