JSign for Old Maids Farm    One of the things I love about my hometown, South Glastonbury, CT is it's rich history.

We celebrate it throughout the year with various events and have one coming up this weekend.

Out the Back Door, a house, garden and farm tour presented by the Historical Society of

Glastonbury and Glastonbury Partners in Planting. The tour runs from 1-6 p.m. and will feature 24 different attractions including gardens, farms, barns, tobacco fields and a private cemetary. Tickets cost $25 in advance or $30 the day of the tour. Shuttle buses are provided. Most all of the stops are located along the Connecticut River, along Tryon Street. This street is listed as a state beautiful scenic roads, and it does not dissapoint!

The Welles-Shipman-Ward House at 972 Main St, built in 1755 is a highlight on the tour. the kitchen fires will be lit and food will be cooking. John Welles and his wife Jerusha once lived there with their five children. The circa -1836 Congregational Church in South Glastonbury is at the corner of Main and High Street.

Another High Street stop is the South Glastonbury Library, it was originally built in 1828 as a worship place for Methodists. As the local Methodist population decreased in the early 1900's it became a volunteer library and continues as such today.

Another popular stop is the Nayaug Stables and Hollister House. This equestrian center includes a horse ring and pastures. The house dates back to 1849.

A favorite in the community is the still-functioning farm is Old Maids Farm located on the corner of Old Maids Lane and Tryon Street. It is one of Connecticuts largest USDA-certified organic farms The house located here was built around 1840. The farm is owned by George and Sharon Purtill. George is a sixth-generation Glastonbury resident.

interesting to read this. I grew up in Simsbury, CT and had a very good friend that lived in Glastonbury. I saw the name and had to take a quick peak in.

I think we are lucky to live in such a beautiful area. Simsbury is such a beautiful place as well. I love all the history around here, it so fascinating to imagine earlier days here. I see you are in Tennessee now, do you get back to CT to visit at all? Rhonda

Last time I was in CT was about 5 years ago when a friend got married. I really only have the one friend as a connection there anymore. She has two girls now though and I would love to go back and see her again and meet her girls. I may have to plan a trip soon! :)

This post caught my eye - my wife grew up in Glastonbury and we have visited now and then.  I will have to show her this post tomorrow and see if she knows these places.

You know Glastonbury has experienced quite a bit of development in recent years because, first of all it is a beautiful town and because we have an outstanding school system. But I have to say that the town has been able to acquire quite a bit of land to preserve and we still have many operating farms today. I love it also because we are right along the Connecticut river and it has a very rich history. So come back for a visit soon! Rhonda
