From ActiveRain Geek to YouTube Criminal -- It's Been a Busy Weekend & I Need Your Help!!

Active Rain GeekSo I'm camping with my family yesterday, surfing the web using the wireless provided by the park service, when I find THIS email message from YouTube:

Your video, Fall Open House and Plant Sale - Kanapaha Botanical Gardens - Gainesville, Florida , may include content that is owned or licensed by these content owners:

  • Content owner: GoDigital Media Group Type: Audio content

The email goes on to say there's nothing I need to do about this (except perhaps breathe into a paper bag!!!  WTF???), but now I've got a "Content Matches" dealio tag next to my video.

The "audio content" referred to by said "You Be in Big Trouble" email consisted of music tracks that came with my iMovie software.  I'm googling "iMovie music fair use" and such but my eyeballs are bouncing around in panic so much that I'm not really finding anything.YouTube criminal

So, question to all you smart techy people:  when I purchased iMovie, didn't I purchase the right to use the music tracks they provided on the software as part of the movies I post???  How do I find out?  And how do I get back on the right side of the law to make that message go away?

Oh, the HUMANITY!!

Hmmm...I would say that you need to contact imovie. They can give the quick answer. There is a possibility that they have limited licenses that would prevent the use of the tracks they provided for commercial use. It would be like buying a CD and using the music on it in a video...just because you own the CD, you do not own the right to reproduce or rebroadcast. We sell our photographs to clients in some cases with warnings that they may not redistribute...some of them don't understand that a purchase does not equal unlimited rights to use.

Coleen...

I agree with Ian. You really should call them for clarification. I'd also get that clarification in writing. That will cover you in the future. Or not :)

One other thing, just because someone tells you something on AR doesn't make it so. AR is still the Internet :)

TLW...ROAR!

Ian - What a great idea!!  You can tell how rattled I was by this whole incident that this NEVER even occurred to me! :)  Thanks so much for pointing out the obvious....I'll get in touch with them tomorrow!

TLDUBYA - ANOTHER big thank you to you, girl!  Getting it in writing to cover my ever-expanding bloggers butt could definitely come in handy.  I wonder if I could get iMovie to send me an elasticized email.....
