NIH Investigating The Impact Of Guns On Health

By
Real Estate Agent

It was reported today that The National Institute of Health is conducting studies into the affects that guns have on health.

This same type of study was discontinued by the CDC more than 10 years ago and deemed useless.  Under the Obama administration it has been handed quietly to another agency to continue.

Gun owners should be aware that this is taking place and the possible implications it may have.  I'm sure anyone with common sense will know that teenagers who carry guns, drink and hang out on corners are more likely to be involved in a shooting incident than other teens.

Read the linked article for more. U.S. Quietly begins to study gun safety.

The administration is spending your tax dollars why?

"Gun related violence is a public health problem - it diverts considerable health care resources away from other problems and, therefore, is of interest to NIH," Don Ralbovsky, NIH spokesman, wrote in an e-mail responding to questions about the grants.

"These particular grants do not address gun control; rather they deal with the surrounding web of circumstances involved in many violent crimes, especially how alcohol policy may reduce the public health burden from gun-related injury and death," he said.

Republican lawmakers have questioned the value of these studies. "They're also leery of NIH research relating to firearms in general, recalling how 13 years ago the House voted to cut CDC funding when critics complained that the agency was trying to win public support for gun control.

"It's almost as if someone's been looking for a way to get this study done ever since the Centers for Disease Control was banned from doing it 10 years ago," Rep. Joe L. Barton, Texas Republican, said of one of the NIH studies. "But it doesn't make any more sense now than it did then."(Washington Times)

Do you think this is a way to deter gun ownership?  Such as saying the premiums for a gun owner are higher because (insert ludicrous reason here)?  That would never work on the dedicated gun owners but if it took guns out of 20% of the homes that have it now, that would be towards the goal of no guns.

In the city of Kennesaw GA, where I worked years ago in college, it was an (either city or county, can't remember) ordinance that required home owners to also own a gun.  The effect was much lower crime because criminals didn't want to take the chance on guessing who was in compliance with the law and who wasn't.

Ron,  I think it is curious that an activity that was deemed useless is being pursued again.  A report that alleges removing guns in cities would reduce shootings is the beginning of a movement to restrict gun ownership under a health issue.

Wow, I wonder how our founding fathers handled their guns without destroying the nation in which they founded.

Communist takeover of America. Secret back door meetings, communication directors stating Mao Tse Tung is her favorite political figure in which she thinks about daily.

Mass murderer you think about daily, and they want to take away our guns?

Bonnie,

For $10 I would have done they study for them. Seems pretty basic "Getting shot is not good for your health"

Alice - That's exactly who I think is behind it.  Great to see ya Alice. I don't know who the local talk radio shows are.

Where's Simon?  Fl is a big gun owner state too.

Nick I watched her yesterday. That speech was given to high school kids.  Being a radical or Communists seems to be a pre-requiste for employment in this administration.

Hugh,  They are spending millions.  NIH is located outside DC.  There was a lawsuit that went to the Supreme Court to overturn the ban on handgun ownership in DC earlier this year.  The study also includes liquor stores.

I do think it is a backdoor way to get started on gun control.

Guns don't kill(hurt) people, people kill(hurt) people.....my HEALTH is considerably BETTER now that I have a handgun and know how to use it.  Our homeowners insurance does not ask about gun(s) in the household.

Every LOCKED GUN STORAGE CASE at Wal-Mart should be SOLD OUT every Mother's Day and Christmas....lock them UP!!!!

I suspect the recent run on guns and amo is because some amo is VERY HARD to find and is EXPENSIVE when you do find it.

Wallace, My son owns a police supply store in Myrtle Beach.  He is a gunsmith and makes custom rifles and shotguns for SWAT teams.  Since before the election certain calibers of ammo have been in short supply.  Since the election primers are being bought up, and from what I have heard, not by the general public. Once ammo would dry up people would reload.  Can't reload without primers.

People have been stocking up since last summer.  I wrote a blog that a gun is not a lethal weapon.  I agree with you.  Guns do not kill people.  My son grew up with guns in the house.  We were never careless with them.  When he was 12 he went to a hunters safety course and my husband taught him to shoot.

When he was 13 he was alone in the house and heard someone breaking in during the day.  He was on the third floor.  He got a rifle - loaded it and was at the top of the stairs. The intruder  thinking the house was empty, rounded the corner on his way upstairs to the third floor.  Needless to say - one look at my son and that gun and the intruder decided retreat and run was the best course of action.  Fortunately my son also knew the "castle" law.  He knew he could not pull the trigger unless the intruder continued up the stairs.  A gun is a deterrent to crime.

I am a proponent of responsbile gun ownership.  I believe if you have a gun in the house for protection you should educate your children and teach them how to use it when they are old enough.

My homeowners insurance asked what breed of dog I owned - not what guns I had.

When my dad was a kid, they took their guns to school. Sometimes while they were walking home from school, they would hunt of some food, or just do a little target practive. My dad told me that on some days the school administrator or teacher would go with them. According to my dad, they even brought knives to school. Scary!

I truly believe that the only people who want to take guns away from us, want to control us.

Kevin,  I agree with you.  People who grew up or live in a rural area have a different view of what weapons are for.  Let's say they respect what they are for.

A few years ago I took my son to a remote part of Maine where he was bear hunting.  I decided to go off on some logging roads to see if I could spot moose.  Before I left - I was given a hand gun.  Even though I had a four wheel drive truck I could still get stuck on some remote road and be forced to walk out.  I'd become prey.

Surely up in Maine they don't carry guns for use against people.
