A Fungus Among Us!

By

After leaving the office one day last week I could see a circle off in the distance up on a hill.

As I got closer, I realized it was a ring of mushrooms.

Immediately thinking I have to post this on Active Rain, I stopped the car, jumped out and snapped the pic.

I thought how odd for them to grow in a circular pattern.

Has anyone ever seen this sort of phenomenon before?

Let's hear about it or better yet if you have a pic of it post it here.

Tony, funny how our blogging makes us think "I can blog about that"!

I bet there is a big dead tree under that grass, or something they are feeding off of.  Just a guess, I am not a fungus expert!

Hi Tony~  I have never seen them growing in a circle!  I have seen them many times in my landscaping though!  I do not particularly like them there!

Tony, on the authority of two reliable sources, I have to tell you it is the work of visiting aliens.

Tony - how large is the circle is it Stonehenge in mushroom form or is it a circle around a long dead tree as Robert suggests

How strange!  I always see them in groupings, but never in a pattern like this.  Funny how your first thought was to snap a pic to post :)

Tony,

I had a long meeting on this problem with Nutsy, he says that there is only one answer and he may be correct. He says that, sometime within the last 30 days a flying saucer, round in shape, landed there. Wow.

Just following up. Having been to space myself, I know what I am talking about.

Tony, I have seen this around a long gone and burried tree stump.  But I believe it's a meeting place for toads...think about it.

Wow, so many responses!!!

I was going to call this post "MushroomHenge"...lol

If the mushrooms are growing around the edge of a tree stump...that had to be some big tree...the circle of mushrooms was about 6 to 7 feet in diameter!

And Nutsy, I always take what you say very seriously!!

Hey Tony,

No, I've never seen them growing in a cicle like that. I'm with Kate on this. Gotta be the work of aliens!

Hey Tony - I have always heard of mushroom rings referred to as Fairy Rings - the Fairies dance and meet in them.  On a more reality based note - there is a scientific reason for it......

I think it's pretty cool that you got to see that!!!

Mushroom rings are actually quite common in undisturbed areas, but because few people get to those undisturbed areas, one thinks they are uncommon.

What happens is that a single mushroom appeared at one time smack dab in the middle of that ring in your picture. Mushrooms typically use all the nutrients in the soil in the small space where they grow, so when they drop their spores, the three or four mushrooms that sprout will be outside of the spot where the original mushroom grow.

Next time, with four mushrooms sprouting, the inside of the ring is dead, so the mushrooms grow on the outside, eventually pushing the ring out farther and farther.

After several weeks/months/years, depending on the species, you'll have a large mushroom ring.
