Yes... it's a Tradition for my family and friends to celebrate our country's birthday at Lacy Park on 4th of July!
Each year, I wake up early in the morning, grab a couple of blankets, run to Starbucks (hard as I try and after many spills, I still can't resist going to Starbucks), drive over to Lacy Park and join a slew of people waiting for the gates to open. Most of the time, I only make this trip once that morning. Although, I have to admit, on a few occasions, I had to go back home and come back. Why? Well... it's early in the morning and you can not get into the park without the Lacy Park San Marino 4th of July bracelet. Okay, I'll be the first to admit - I am NOT a morning person.
The gates of the park swing open and hundreds, maybe thousands of people make a mad rush to their favorite spot to park their blankets.
Every year, I say to myself, I will not RUN... No, I will maintain my dignity and will purposefully walk into the park and head over to the general vicinity that we generally sit at. Come on, let's face it, Lacy Park is HUGE - set on 30 acres! There's plenty of space for everyone. :-)
And, every year, I just can't help myself! Everyone starts running and I as gracefully as I can - NOT (pretty hard to do with blankets and other stuff) make my way in (being carried most of the time by the wave of runners.) It is really quite hillarious! If you have time, what a great place to people watch!
Seriously though... I so look forward to 4th of July. If you have not had an opportunity to visit Lacy Park, make this year your first year to do so. The fireworks are spectacular! There are plenty of activities throughout the day if you choose to stay. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are out there putting in their community service hours. There's face painting for the kids, watermellon contests, firemen, a wonderful concert or two. There's also a parade before the evening activities begin. And, of course, our San Marino community is together at its best!
Stop on by and join us in celebrating America's Birthday! I hope to see you there!!!
