Swine Flu a National Emergency - Are You Kidding Mr President

Did your hear that President Obama declared earlier this afternoon that H1N1 flu (aka swine flu) outbreak a national emergency?

According to the press release, there have been a 1000 deaths associated with swine flu. Of the 1000 deaths nearly 10 percent have been children. It is sad to hear about the lives lost to this new form of influenza, but is it really a national emergency. More importantly, should this be the concern of Obama.

Swine Flu Media Hype by Dave Granlund

The last time I checked, both the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization are closely monitoring the situation. If one wanted to view an interactive map of the reported cases worldwide, one could view that at the New England Journal of Medicine H1N1 ("Swine Flu") HealthMap.

1,000 deaths seems like a large number. In reality, it is insignificant. According to the Centers of Disease Control there are an estimated 36,000 deaths attributable to seasonal influenza every year.

In other words, less than 3% of seasonal influenza deaths will be associated with H1N1.

Besides, doesn't Obama have bigger issues on his plate such as unemployment and a stagnant economy. It definitely made me scratch my head in confusion this afternoon on the announcement by the media that Obama declared Swine Flu a National Emergency - Are You Kidding Mr President?

James,  You said exactly what I have been thinking since I saw the news.  When is Obama going to make the regular flu a National Emergency, or one of these causes of death in the US (Source: CDC/National Center for Health Statistics):

  • Heart disease: 631,636
  • Cancer: 559,888
  • Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 137,119
  • Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 124,583
  • Accidents (unintentional injuries): 121,599
  • Diabetes: 72,449
  • Alzheimer's disease: 72,432
  • Influenza and Pneumonia: 56,326
  • Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 45,344
  • Septicemia: 34,234
  • Thanks for posting, I am going to re-blog it.

Well said James.  I'd rather have the flu, than the shot, that's for sure.

Gary - You obviously have done your research on other diseases that have had broader death toll on our society. Just makes you wonder what Obama is thinking.

Gregg - A flu shot is simply a person's authorization to be injected with the very virus that they are trying to protect themselves against. Almost like saying I will intentionally get in an accident so I don't avoid down the road.

James - Glad to see you back posting to AR. I hope all is going well for you.  As for the swine flu... we had it come through our house. For everything I have heard, it was not that bad. There was one day of high fever and a few baths to help cool my daughter down. And of course there were the 'chills' that we dealt with. But it only lasted 24 hours, followed by 3 days of sniffles. Im sure thats not the case for everyone, but it certainly was not as bad as what I had heard. It shouldnt be a concern for the President. I think he has bigger issues to deal with.

John - I concur. That first 24 hours can kick your butt especially if you're not prepared. Influenza as a whole is life-threatening and we deal with it every season. Let's focus on the real ills of our economy.

I'm with you on this too, besides, I've read some interesting articles like on Dr. Mercola's website that deal with this and also uncover other issues of concern regarding this.  I'm a conspiracy theorist anyways, but the numbers speak for themselves.
