Teaching old dogs new tricks.

By
Home Inspector with Charles Buell Inspections Inc.

Does anyone actually believe that you can not teach old dogs new tricks?

Fall colors  While this may be true of dogs, I like to flatter myself in thinking that this is not necessarily true of human beings.  To watch the actions of some people though, one does have to wonder.

It seems as though, most of the limitations we place on what we can learn is placed on us by our own thinking.  While it may be true that younger minds are perhaps more adept at certain kinds of learning they will always be limited by their lack of experience.  As we get older we tend to let that very experience limit us.  This is especially evident with older people and their unwillingness to embrace the internet and computer technology----like it is just another language they do not have time to learn----or have no need to learn.  They seem oblivious to the worlds it could open to them.  For me I am still very excited by all kinds of opportunities to have new experiences----to learn new things.

The older I get, the more I become aware of how much more I can still learn because of all the space created by all the things I have forgotten.  Just like Monte Python’s Mr. Creosote----there is always room for one more bite!  When was the last time you exploded?

Suesan it is hard to imagine what else there really is except to keep collecting experiences.  As far as I know they are the only thing we get to take with us when we go:)

Charles,

I don't think there is any limitations to how much we can learn, you know that ole' saying "whether you think you can opr you think you can't, your right" I am not sure who said it, but probably someone  wiser than I. We are capable of so much more than we think.

I love Mr. Creosote!

That is the funniest scene in "The Meaning of Life"

That's also the 2nd time it's come up in the last week. I had posted it in a comment on one of my blogs and now here it is again in yours!

Charlie - I have actually looked forward to changes throughout my life, but I think I am more of the exception to the rule. Change is what makes life so interesting and adventurous.

I've always felt that we can be our own best friend or worst enemy. Willingness to change is the key.

A friend of mine once said the day I stop learning is the day I stop breathing.  I can't say it any better than that.

Gotta love Mr Creosote. I agree with Craig. The most memorable part of the movie.

A couple of months or so ago, I was performing an inspection for 73 year old widow.  As I've said before, I try to get my clients to attend the inspection and she did.

At some point during the inspection, it almost always come up.  And it did this time too.  I ask them what they do for a living or with their time, or hobbies.

Her answer:  I teach senior citizens how to use computers and the internet!  That's right SHE TEACHES OTHERS at her age.

As you said Charles, there's always room to learn more becasue of the things we forget!

Past experience prevents us from moving forward into areas we are not familiar with.  In this business, there is no place for that kind of thinking.

That scene from Monty Python is not for the weak of stomach - no pun intended!

Charles, I live to learn...the biggest obstacle I have is the lack of time in each day! I love the Internet. When I got in real estate, back in 1994, I didn't know what a mouse was. I thought they were pulling my leg. ...talk about  a greenhorn! I have joined your group...I like what you wrote about it on the side page. Thank you for bringing it to my attention, and I will be visiting it regularly!

Dan, good thing to watch right after Thanksgiving dinner:)

Jane it seems like the older I get the hours get shorter and shorter.  Thanks for joining the group

In 2006 or 2007 one of my favorite clients was a man who knew what Zillow was. Zillow came out in 2006 I believe.  He also knew Zillows price on his house was ludicrous.   He tried to get on our companies Web 2.0 site but his computer was too old,but he tried. Boo to our developers for not making the system more accessible.  My client checked his email daily and would send me short to the point responses via email.

I believe he was in his 80s. He  and his wife both dozed off during my listing appointment...but we got it listed, marketed and sold. Lots via email.

We were talking about changes in our office meeting the other day... and age.
