Consumer Tip of the Week:  Do Not Call List Expiration

Do Not Call ListLately, I have been getting a flood emails about registering your cell phone for the Do Not Call List.  I kept saying to myself that I think I remember reading somewhere that this was a hoax.  I also have been receiving a lot of telemarketer calls lately.  My personal numbers are on the do not call list so I thought it was not legal for the calls to come in so regularly.  I even got a call last night at midnight !  I could not figure out what was causing all of the calls all of a sudden so I decided to do a little research.  I found out some interesting things that I wanted to share with you.

Did you know that the Do Not Call List expires after five years?  Fortunately, all you have to do is resubmit the numbers and the calls should stop after your number is on the list around 31 days.    I also found out if you change your mind, you can remove your name from the list as well.  No need to worry, companies and individuals with whom you have an existing business relationship AND those to whom you have provided your number many continue to contact you.  What I really found interesting is that every company is not included.  Charities, government agencies, and telephone surveyors are permitted to continue calling.  If any other calls are incorrectly received and have violated the law, you can file a complaint against the company with the FTC.  First, you must have been on the Do Not Call List for at least 31 days.  Next, You must ask them to stop calling, document the date, time, and name and/or phone number of the company.

I found all of this very interesting.  If you would like more information on the Do Not Call List or what to do in case you suspect violation of the law by a company, please feel free to utilize the following resources:

I hope this was helpful to you,

P.S.-I wouldn't mind receiving your calls about Huntsville real estate or local homes for sale....just not at midnight. :-D

Makea,

I am glad that it was helpful for you.  I did not know a lot of the information myself.  As I started to learn more, I had to share the information.

Did you know that politicians are exempt from the Federal Do Not Call registry?

There is a new non profit organization, Citizens for Civil Discourse, starting a National Political Do Not Call registry.

Yes, there are several groups that are excluded from the Do Not Call registry.  Charities, government agencies, politicians, and telephone surveyors are excluded.  Thank you for sharing the information Shaun.
