Who "Eavesdrops" On Your E-Mail ?

By
Real Estate Agent with EXP Realty 414-525-0563 57026-90 Broker

eavesdropping We have become very used to thinking of "our mailbox" wherever it is....as being "our e-mail". The same kind that appears at your house, office, post office box that is addressed to you....and you open...you read, you re-cycle as you choose.

The internet has brought us e-mail....we had a seller recently that had dozens of addresses and several phone numbers so leaving voice or e-mail meant leaving in multiple places to be sure he got the message.

Your "right to privacy" or what you may think is your right....may not be at all.  If your broker, a company...a response or contact on a network...social or business is thru the business....the sponsor...the owner, the manufacture....the social network....it is also "their e-mail".

Sometimes it is not that anything you wrote or have written to you has an "atomic secret level of privacy....or you have said/written/repeated anything of a secretive nature...it just is not anyone else's business.

Soooo if you don't want your e-mails to be "Everyone else's Business"....use your own e-mail...not the brokers', not the networks, not the buyer or seller's company e-mail to discuss their personal business...use your own account. There are lots of places on the internet that have FREE e-mail of course...gmail, yahoo, hotmail....to name a few. If you want your communication protected..the messages you write to be kept private....think twice before you dash off the note...hit the reply...heads up....keyboards alert...know that the intended receiver of your message may not be the only one who reads it.

I can't believe the comments that are surprised by this, wow. I find that most agents , all that I know don't follow up anyway with clients past or present.

This makes so much sense.  It's easy to get a private email though I understand some companies don't allow emails to the addresses during the day.  Still with today's pda's it shouldn't be a big problem for many or for much longer.

Sally and David,

This is particularly true, if you decide to move to another broker, then you have aproblem with previous contacts and moving them.

Once you realize it...it does feel like someone can go thru your underwear drawer "at will"...sounds like there will be a lot of new e-mail addresses out there and fewer people using corporate and "reply, response, connect" buttons..and that's a good thing...thank you all !

I am a broker/owner and I use firstname.lastname.rmxnews.com for all of my agents.  I encourage them to have their own email address and just forward this one to it.  The reason I have this set up like this is so that I always know my agents email address no matter what.

I agree that they need their own email though. Before I opened my own business 5 years ago, the firm I was with monitored emails crossing their servers.....and found out we were opening a RE/MAX franchise....it wasn't pretty.

Snooping is never pretty ....sometimes we know on a subconscious sort of level that other people CAN look, read, copy....and it becomes part of whatever is "normal" and we forget...sometimes to the detriment of the agent who wants to leave to go elsewhere....

Anything that is transmitted via radio frequency is considered not-private.  Radio waves are public property and domain.   And cell phones are 100% radio based.  Emails via your blackberry may not be as private/protected as you think.

If its private to you, use your own email.  If its brokerage business, use your brokers.

Interesting Mike...there are some brokers that have rules about "who the listing belongs to"....and that is the broker...and others who are more agent centered who feel that the agent earned the listing...and if they leave, they are welcome to take it with them....

Sally & David:

I don't know why any agent would use their company email.  You just don't know what kind of security they are using.  All of us should have private email.

Sally and David - Very scary, now I will think before I use the contact button on all social sites.  On another note, my agents use the company email but I would not even know how to look, never would.  Thank you for the warnings.

I am looking now for a custom domain and email for me.  The responses I have seen above really ring some bells.  I know I plan to be with my broker till the end, but "what if"?  My email contacts and phone contacts need to be just that...

"The end"is a long time Jon,...times change and sometimes brokers do not....or cannot or will not...always best to keep your options open...go to GODADDY and see if the domains you are considering are available...you can try them out...they suggest some...it's kinda fun !

And as we have seen with many court cases throughout the country, Yahoo, Gmail, AOL, and all the rest have copies, backup copies, and backup backup copies that they keep virtually forever, so don't say anything bad because a court order can get those companies to release everything to Judge Iam T. Judge.
