Yesterday was "REALTOR'S Helping Seniors Day" in Sun City, Sun City West & Youngtown, AZ. It was a wonderful day filled with many volunteer REALTORS, Affiliates, spouses and friends coming together to help some of our most forgotten citizens. Seniors who are below poverty level. Yes, they are home owners, most who purchased their homes when there were two retirement incomes and many of them with those incomes frozen at the retirement income level of the 1960's, 70' & 80's. Spouse has now died, income cut in half, Dr. medicine, and food has escalated but not their incomes. Age keeps them from being able to physically do the things many of us take for granted. Like washing their windows, inside and out, hard to do when you are using a walker. Or the 92 year old former cabbie who can no longer take care of his yard and can't afford to hire it done.
This project has been ongoing for the last 7 years, received national recognition from both NAR and the "Make A Difference Day" organizations. In September the WEMAR, West Maricopa Association of REALTORS, Board of Directors voted to discontinue the program. Those of us involved with the program are still in a quandary as to why that decision was made. It seems CHANGE is the key word of the year.
My thanks to everyone who has ever helped with REALTORS Helping Seniors Day. Especially to our dedicated committee members, Sherry Becker-Grudizen, Estelle Pioro-Jewett, Brenda Quintina, Cindy Smith, Violet "Peaches" Hull, Walt Patterson, Cindy Smith, Sheri Parrott, Lori Reeves, Debbie Henderson and our annual Team Leaders Frank & Patricia Fox, Rowdy Dawson, and Jack Chalupka. Each of these dedicated professionals has given for the last 7 years to help make this event a success. Our new committee members Rick, Jami, Anthony, & Rhett thank you for your hard work this year. And to the unnamed volunteers you are all much much appreciated.
