Be Kind To Your House and It Will Be Kind To You

Congratulations, you finally took the plunge and purchased that perfect get away home. So why are you being unkind to your new investment. Branches, shrubbery, flower beds and over grown vegetation against the siding of your home will eventually lead to structural damage. Especially if your home's siding consists of T1-11.

Wood siding will decay if kept in direct contact with moisture. Carpenter Ants will also move in and start building galleries through your foundation beams and joists. Trim all branches, shrubs away from the siding. Keep grass mowed and never stack firewood in direct proximity. These are just a few simple things you can do to help prolog the life of your home's siding and save you money.

Very important not to have foliage growing all over the house -- clearing and tidying things will help preserve the home.

Sue - Proper home maintenance and gardening are sometimes at odds, but it's always important to allow the care of the structure win out.

Terry, yes plants too close to the house will eventually cause damage. Glad to hear you have it under control.

Andrea, as a little kid growing up I was always amazed by how pretty the vines looked and how nicely they grew, I still am. It's a shame that they can cause so much destruction to the surfaces they attach themselves to. Sorry about your window.

John, this is so true. Sometimes it's a hard call, but in the end the possible structural damage must be the decisive factor.

Kate, I know what you mean. I have always found climbing vines to be very beautiful, but unfortunately they are as harmful as they are beautiful. Now that's not to say that one must go without, I plan to set up a really nice trellis to grow some vines next year. Away from my house. LOL.

That sounds so cool. Mine will be off the living room facing the river as the kitchen faces the rear side yard which is fenced off for the dogs. Check them out and you'll understand why we need a separate fenced off area for them. Boys Day Out
