Furniture Arrangement is Key - Before & In Progress Pics

I am a very brave woman!  I just started redesigning my mother-in-law's living room without her permission.  She got new living room furniture (sofa, chair and recliner) shortly before leaving town for a few weeks.  She's planning on letting me help her decorate so I told her that I would go look at the new furniture and start shopping around for things while she was out of town.  The furniture is beautiful.  The arrangement, not so much.  She had expressed concern about all the furniture being up against the wall and leaving a big empty space in the middle of the room.  She was talking about getting a sofa table to put between the couch and the wall to push the couch farther into the room.  When I suggested an area rug or coffee table instead, she didn't think it would look right.  I didn't really push the issue because I hadn't seen the furniture yet.

Well, today I got to see the furniture.  I couldn't help moving things around when I got there.  I had planned on putting it all back, but then I started pulling things from other rooms and the rest is history.  I can't think of any better way to help her visualize my ideas than to just do it.  I just hope she likes it.  If she doesn't, I will help her put it all back and just go with the flow.

I just want to mention a few things about the pictures:

  1. I pulled a rug she wasn't using from the garage and placed it upside down so she would know that I was just using it to help her visualize a rug there.
  2. She also ordered an ottoman for the big chair, but it hasn't arrived yet.  The original configuration would have blocked the pathway to the kitchen/dining area.  In the WIP pictures, you'll see a big open space in front of the chair.  Just picture a matching ottoman there.
  3. They delivered the wrong pillows with the sofa and chair.  The pillows will coordinate with the recliner.
  4. She is getting a bigger TV and moving the entertainment center into her bedroom.  We had to move some furniture around and out of her bedroom to make room for the entertainment center.  The furniture that I brought in from other rooms were those pieces that were moved out (secretary desk next to recliner) or no longer fit the space right (end table).  I replaced the bedside table with a smaller table I found in the garage that fit the space better.  I also brought in her matching bedroom lamps (one was on a dresser and the other on her bedside table) and placed the lamp that was in the living room on the new bedside table.  Note:  She has quite a bit of furniture and has talked about buying more.  I wanted to show her that she doesn't need to buy new tables for the living room and that we can use the things she already has.
  5. She was also planning on getting rid of the corner coffee table.  After I took the WIP pictures, I positioned it in front of the big chair with a note reading "Imagine me as an ottoman."
  6. I tried to move everything that didn't match out of the space.  Obviously, we still need to purchase some additional accessories, but I did go ahead and use what I had.  That is why I've labeled these pictures "In Progress" pics instead of "After" pics.

So, here are the pictures.  I know you don't know her, but do you think she'll like it?

Good job and a little FYI Make your pictures smaller, much smaller so people can view them in a group and the file size is not as large. Again good job!

Thanks for the tip, Paul!  What's the best way to do that?  Do you size them before you upload them to you blog or after?  This is the first blog I've posted pictures on.  It was late and I got lazy. I know there are alot of them too.  I got a little bit trigger happy and couldn't decide which ones to post.

I just talked to my MIL.  I got the impression that she wasn't crazy about the furniture arrangement either.  She talked about maybe positioning the sofa in front of the window, needing something behind the big chair if she left it there and complained about the piano being in the way and the room being such a weird shape.  I simply told her, "I'm not worried.  I have some ideas.  We'll figure it out when you get back."  I think I'm going to pick out some curtains for her and tack a picture to the curtains, a rug and tack a picture to the rug, maybe some wall art and stick pictures on the walls, etc.

Nicola, I don't know if she will enjoy my efforts, but I'm hoping so.

Julianna, she does not even play piano!  It's one of the furniture pieces that she's kept since her boys were kids.  She's talked about getting rid of it, but I think it looks nice on that wall.

Thanks to everyone for your encouragement.  I know this isn't a home staging, but staging and redesign sometimes go hand in hand.  Also, this should result in some decluttering of her home.

Very brave...do let us know her reaction!  Get it on camera, if you can...I bet she'll love it!

I would love to tackle my MIL's house to declutter it, but there are too many emotional attachments...not going there!!!!  Both FIL and MIL blame each other for the clutter...it's pretty funny.

Thanks for sharing!!!

Great work Charissa. I am actually almost finished doing the interior design work for my mother in law...how funny is that. Got the master bedroom done and the only thing left is to have pillows made for the family room & living room.

Charissa - I like what you have done with the place (isn't that what you hope your MIL will say?)  I will bookmark this blog as I must see what you post about her reaction.

Charissa: I am so sorry I haven't been able to give you feed back yet. My computer went on the blitz (deleted all my songs on iTunes and my MS Money...grr) and I have been working 14 hour days. Wahhh poor me...anyways enough excuses I will try to get it all together and give you some feedback this weekend if it isn't too late. Sorry!

Don't worry about it, Christine!  You have much bigger and better things to worry about with your model home project and new business/website!  Actually, my client has been out of town and we haven't had the chance to regroup since I gave him my suggestions on furniture purchases, but I do know that he purchased the coffee table from option two before he left town.  I don't even know what kind of budget I'll have for accessories, but I would welcome any ideas you might have.  Thanks and good luck fixing your computer!

Charissa, "Oh wow, I never would have thought of that! I love it." That is what MIL should say anyway. You know a prophet is without honor in his home town; right? I hope she will love it -- she should. But if she doesn't you can't take it personaly. You are good at what you do, you went the extra mile and by golly it turned out nice.

Several of you commented that you would like to know the outcome of the redesign I did on my mother-in-law's living room without her permission.  Well, today we brought her home from the airport and as we were pulling into her drive way, I told her she should be prepared for a surprise.  I told her if she didn't like it, it could easily be changed.  I think she thought I painted the walls or something, which I would never do without permission.  She was probably relieved when she found that I had just moved around some of her furniture and accessories.  She wasn't upset, but she didn't seem overjoyed either.  I was not disappointed by her reaction in that she is not the most demonstrative person, but I was delighted when she called shortly after we got home to let me know that she really liked it.

Charissa, you didn't say how old you MIL is, but remember that the elderly often have a hard time with change. This may be why it took her a little while to warm up to the new design. I think what you did was a lovely gift of your time and talent.

Charissa - thanks for the update.  Kathy's point is good as sometimes the elderly don't like change.  Kudos to you for taking the time and effort to enhance her surroundings.

She has to love it! It is much more asthetically pleasing. You are very sweet to help her arrange her furniture. Considering she is your mother-in-law too is bravery at it's peak.

Charissa, I love the new design of the room, and I'm sure your Mother-in-law is very proud to have a daughter-in-law like you. I definitely would consider myself lucky to own a room like that. You were FANTASTIC!

P.S. Hi from Texas

Emily, thanks so much for your feedback!  It looks even better now since she has switched out light fixtures and put in new hardwood floors.  You should see it in person!  Thanks again for your support!
