A Deer Dear.......what did you do? (A driving safety course)

By
Real Estate Agent with Century-21 Homestar

After a long rainy day Becky decides to go into work for a few hours. The kids go to bed I'm thinkin...great I can watch some T.V. ....She gives me a kiss and says I will be home in a few hours. O ya the house to myself.....

Nope not even 5 minutes later my cell phone is ringing..... "Call from Becky..Call from Becky" my cell phone says....So I pic up the phone...

I say " What you miss me Already" (I know she didn't) but I had to ask....

She said "I just hit a deer"

I said "What did you do"?

She said "I just hit a deer dear"

I said "O"

Then see said "what do I do"

(Shes asking me like I'm the professional deer hitter....)

I said " Are you ok"

She said "my car is totaled"

I said "OK that's nice are you ok?"

She then said " did you hear me my car is (------edited for your reading enjoyment------) totaled"

I said "ok hold on call the police I will be right there"

she was a mile down the road and she whacked a deer....or should I say the deer whacked her...

So what do you do? The thing to do is dial 9-1-1. If the deer is moving, pull your car  in front of oncoming traffic and turn on your hazards. This will stop others from hitting the deer. When the police arrive, fill out an accident report for insurance purposes. The police will be able to call the proper local authorities about the deer.........From the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Although deer-vehicle collisions can cause extensive vehicle damage, most serious injuries and fatalities are caused by drivers taking evasive actions," said Kathy Swanson, director of Driver and Vehicle Services with the Department of Public Safety. "Drivers need to avoid swerving into oncoming traffic or leaving the road which can cause them to hit a tree or other object. It's safer to hit a deer than to risk hitting another vehicle or a fixed object such as a tree," she said. "Apply your brakes firmly, hold onto the steering wheel and bring your vehicle to a controlled stop......By Josh Peterson

Ok so now you and I are experts on what to do when your loved ones call saying " I hit a Deer Dear "

O ya Becky was fine ....The car its not so bad....

When its dark and you just whacked a deer it always seems worse then you think.....Stay calm call 911 then call your loved ones and don't tell them the car is totaled....It just scares us way to much...

drive safe everyone .....peace zane

It's great that she was safe.  Deer do tear up the cars.  I lived in the boondock for four years and missed quite a few.  One of the keys is never swerve and lose control of the car.  it's better to hit them than kill yourself.

Lots of people have smash ups with deer in Arkansas.  Where I live we see them all the time.  If one jumps in front of my car, I slow to a crawl because chances are there are more behind.  I'm glad your dear is okay and the car is not too bad.

Glad Becky was okay, sorry about the car.  But I'm most intreaged by your ring tone... that's funny.

I have been hit by a deer and almost hit both a cow and a buffalo on the highway.  All three times I braked, but maintained my lane.  Great post.  I would have never thought about using my car to keep someone else from hitting the deer.  When I hit one I drug it into the bed of my truck and took it home with me.

I grew up in the country, so hitting deer once and a while was just a way of life. Glad to hear that no one was hurt my friend.

Oh my - I'm glad Becky is OK, and the car looks not too bad either.  I've hit 3 deers, dear - well, actually 2, and the 3rd one really did hit me.  I was not nearly as calm as Becky though, had no cell service, and not a clue as to what you should do....except keep driving down the dark road with the headlight dangling like a disconnected eyeball...UGH!

Zane, I have heard that people mostly do get hurt by swerving - sadly the best thing to do is hit the deer and stay on the road.

Hi Zane -- tried to send you an email - but it came back as undeliverable -- I think the spooks have entered email land today! LOL!!  Thank you Zane for the shout out, I really appreciate that.  As for being a professional deer killer --- not really something I aspire to! HAHA!!  Have a great day!
