Another hot Arizona summer

The summer heat has arrived, no doubt about it.  But as I sit here in my air conditioned Ahwatukee home I wonder how did my ancestors do it?

My late-grandfather moved to the valley when he was 18, nearly 100 years ago.  He use to tell me that it was not as hot then, but still I wonder how anyone could live here without air conditioning.

The use of a/c is what has made both the Phoenix area and Las Vegas area grow over the last 30-40 years.  I too often wonder how others survived...maybe that's why the life-span was so much shorter in the old days.   Of course they did not have all the concrete that we have now....concrete reflects the sun and makes it even hotter.

Wet Sheets and a fan, sleeping porches outside (with the wet sheets) As far as problems, Phoenix had an incredible % of pneumonia in the summer because of it.

My dad tells me they had to put the legs of their beds in coffee cans with oil in the bottom because of scorpions, too YIKES!!  But he also said he had to walk miles to school in the snow... although they lived in the center of now PV and his dad gave the elementary school part of his land to build on :)

Mary- very true!
Jim- YUCK :)
