Denver Metro Area - Recreation - Try some Heat Escape & Skate
It seems that almost every day this week has been close to 100 degrees. Its hot. Need an escape? Do what we do, skate.
Many of you know that my family is pretty involved in hockey. One of my children is a youth hockey player and the other skates sometimes too. So we look at our summer skating time as not just practice & something to do - but an escape from the heat. I even strap on the skates from time to time and I haven't fallen down in quite some time.
We skate fairly often for free skate at the South Suburban Ice Arena in Centennial. It only takes us about 12 minutes to get there from our home in Highlands Ranch. They have many lessons available for all ages and abilities and also have a great Learn to Hockey skate program, even for adults. Their open skate times are generally 90 minutes each and are very easy on the budget whether you live in district or out. They also have skate rentals available, cheap. Schedules and rates for the South Suburban Ice Arena can be found here.
Other area ice arenas (besides South Suburban) are:
- Family Sports Ice Center - Centennial
- University of Denver - Joy Burns Arena, Denver
- Big Bear - Lowry, Denver
- Foothills - The Edge, Littleton
The next time you need an escape from the heat, need a change of pace from the pools, try skating. You may want to even bring your mittens.
photo to right shows the "children" skaters on the building. This is one of the things my kids love about this arena.
