Desert Dwellers: Costa's Hummingbird At My Kitchen Window

Mortgage and Lending with SUNSTREET MORTGAGE, LLC (BK-0907366, NMLS 145171) NMLS 223495

Hummingbird in our backyard.

Waiting to be fed...Some mornings it's downright hard to go to work.  This 3" male Costa's hummingbird can be pretty demanding, sitting on the tip of an Octopus Agave, glaring at the kitchen window, just waiting for his feeder to be filled.

That's not the expression of patience.  He knows who's in charge, and it's not me.

Perhaps if I were shooting the photos with 35 mm film, I'd be more disciplined.  After all, each shot with film costs money. That's the beauty of digital photography.  I can keep on taking pictures as long as he will oblige by sticking around.  Too bad that I have a day job as a mortgage guy...

But we funded a VA purchase today, and my borrowers enjoy birds too.  They have a kitchen of their own now, with mountain views and as many as 20 different kinds of hummingbirds to attract.

Isn't life good!

We love our humming birds -- this guy of yours looks like a cute one -- not sure we have any just like him up here.

That's a mighty big humming bird. I've had humming birds demand hand feeding, they're as bright and fearless as they are small.

Neat photo! Digital photos have encouraged allot of people to keep shooting.

Beauty Hummer! Haven't seen this fellow's type on the Olympic Peninsula. Mike, I really, really enjoy your photos. When I lived in the desert, I definitely didn't have an appreciation for the beauty that's there. Your photos change that.

Mike, I am a little envious that y'all get all the other hummers. We only have the ruby throated here. I plan to take a trip out to Ramsey Canyon early next year. Hope to look you up when I get to town. Cool pic ☺☺☺

How cool is that?  Hummers for pets.  Demanding little devils!  Hope you got a little work done.  :-)

You have the same satisfaction as do I of seeing a buyer move into their newly purchased HOME.

Awww. He's beautiful. My hummingbirds are gone for the winter, but I keep the sugar water fresh when they are here. Have a great weekend!

Good morning!  You commented while I was responding, so I'm thankful for the "edit" function.  LOL  I'll bet you have some great hummer pics.

Isn't it the best?!  I love my job as a lender, and you're so right.  It's tremendously satisfying when the new owners can say "It's mine."

I think it's the other way around.  The hummingbird thinks we're HIS pets.

You have a standing invitation to dinner with us at our home when you get to town.  Ramsey Canyon has 22 varieties of hummingbirds, if I'm not mistaken.

What a wonderful thing to hear.  Thank you.  That gives me great satisfaction!

That one photo is the result of half an hour at the kitchen window and maybe forty tries.  It sure is fun!

Bright and fearless.  That would define this little guy.  He's three inches from head to tail.

Thanks for being the first to comment!  One of the unexpected joys of moving to Arizona is the variety of hummingbirds.  We were used to seeing only the Ruby Throated hummer in New Jersey.

Good morning my friend,

I see that you were burning the midnight oil to share this cute little fella with us this morning.  I am partial to digital photography too.

Very nice look at some local color/inhabitants.

Yes I was.  I've been trying to get a good color shot of that little guy for quite awhile.  Usually the light is wrong for capturing the brilliance of the gorget.
