Debi: That one's completely original! It was in the boyhood home of Lyndon Johnson, in Johnson City, Tx.
Patricia: I grew up hearing my grandmother call a refrigerator an ice box. And I sometimes I, to this day, refer to a refrigerator as an ice box. You should see my grandchildren's confusion when I do!
Was this picture actually taken from LBJ's restored boyhood home? I'm looking at the picture and it seems odd that the ice box is next to a bed?? Then I look at the floor plan of the restored home and see there is a sleeping porch right off the kitchen. Coincidence? Or did I connect the dots correctly??
Ruth: You connected the dots! The ice box was on the sleeping porch. Just outside the kitchen.
Debra: I can't imagine having to use it! Aren't we lucky? And then in 100 years folks will wonder how on Earth we managed without the technology THEY use. LOL
Marianne,
This is just a great slice of Americana - the device that gave it's name to the refrigrator - still known by many as the "icebox." :)
Steve
Hey Steve, it's especially known as an "ice box" around this house. I think I picked it up from my parents.
