Sloughhouse - It's Not All About the Corn

Sloughhouse by Myrl Jeffcoat

If you were to take Jackson Road-Highway 16 out of Sacramento, while traveling mostly east, but a tad south for a half hour or so, you would come upon the delightfully rural community of Sloughhouse.

Although the community is quiet and somewhat small, it does enjoy rich history.

As Sacramentans and other visitors to the area shuffle through Sloughhouse today, they often stop at the Davis Ranch Farmer's Market for ears of corn, which is prized among locals as being the best available.  The area is a popular stopping off point for Sacramento County folks hoping for a pleasant drive up the highway further to Gold Rush Country.  A few miles beyond Sloughhouse, you can take Highway 49 (the Gold Rush Highway), and travel on through Amador City, Sutter Creek, Jackson, and destinations beyond - making for a delightful day trip.

Sloughhouse is a verdant valley which acts as a floodplain for Deer Creek and the Cosumnes River.  Prior to becoming known for its corn growing capacity, its land was mainly tended for the growth of hops.  Traveling back in time a generation or so, would have you revisiting the area and finding trellises of hops growing up V shaped wires 20+ feet or so.

Early history records that on a summer evening in 1840, William Daylor, one of John Sutter's cooks became one of the first noted white men to visit the area.  Daylor came upon the valley while conducting a search for some of the livestock belonging to his boss.

The area was found populated by Miwok Indians.  Daylor later returned to the area with a friend, Jared Dixon Sheldon, who in 1844 acquired a Mexican land grant of approximately 20,000 acres.  Sheldon had a reputation for getting along with the Indians.

Laxson - It is so easy to jump on highways 99, 80 and 50 when trying to get the Hell outta Dodge (Sacramento).  But there are these wonderful smaller highways that slow the pace, and calm the mind in a hurry.  Jackson Highway (Highway 16) and Highway 49 are two of my favorites.  They take you places back in time that you would totally miss if you were on the major freeways.

And yet one more fun place you've been to, Myrl, that I haven't been. I have seen the signs for Sloughhouse, but have no reason to go there. Someday, perhaps, I should come up with a reason and just go. Of course, I'd have to have a free day to do that.

Myrl, Would you do another blog on your slide show tutorial. You can use use everything of your previous blog, just write slightly different so you can get credit for a new blog. Perhaps you could embed another actual slide show in the post as a finished product. If you need tutorial slides that you can add the step by steps to, like a power point presentation, you can also get them free with the sliderocket.com web based program. You do such beautiful shows and thought maybe you share them again with the PhotoBlogger group.

Pat - I'm glad you liked the slide show. . .Thanks for visiting!

Carole - Sloughhouse has a very relaxed - stepping back in time feel to it!  I'm always overjoyed when my pictures please you!

Andrea - I think we need to focus on a girl's weekend out:-)

Elizabeth - We need to go on a one day road trip!  I'm worried about you not getting out more:-)

Debi - Where was it that you lived in the Sacramento area.  You said once - but I have forgotten.

William - Yes, I can do an updated tutorial on the slide show.  Give me a couple days. . .I want to add something to the last part of my original blog about needing to upload the animation file to a domain, or the pictures will not animate, and remain static on ActiveRain.

Myrl, I am going to have to take that drive one day!  It is certainly a different side to California that most of us tourists would never see otherwise.  Thanks for sharing it with us!

Hi Myrl, I loved this visit to Sloughhouse.  The fall vegetables and colors in your photos are gorgeous. I might need a lot of extra room in my car for all the goodies at the farmers market.

Tony and Darcy - Highway 16-Jackson Highway isn't a road that tourists outside of California would generally use, unless they specifically were touring California Gold Rush towns in the state. Even then they can get to them using the more major freeways.  I like Highway 16 because it is so much more slower paced, and is like stepping back in time.

Mary - I'm glad you enjoyed it.  When I stepped out of the car and saw all that color in the bins and on the shelves I was in heaven:-)  And yes, I came home with my trunk full of corn, acorn squash and pumpkins.  I'm brewing up a pot of pumpkin-butternut soup this morning!

I enjoyed the beautiful slide show, Myrl and well as you sharing about the local history of the area around Sloughhouse.  I do remember Sutter's Mill and the discovery of gold from my school days so it sounds like this is close to that area.  What a neat place to come and visit.  I like the fact that it is a small place.  Thanks for providing this information to your beautiful photos!

Hi Myrl,

Thank you for those wonderful photos and a fascinating history lesson too!  I may have mentioned before that I have visited Sacramento many years ago but I'm certainly not familiar with Sloughhouse. It looks wonderful and yet another town on my list of places to visit one day.

Beautiful slideshow, Myrl! For some reason, when I drove through Sloughhouse earlier this year, the Inn looked closed down. Is it or was I driving by during closed hours?

Sharon - I love the California Gold Country history that is in Sacramento and surrounding it..

Steve - Sloughhouse is found to be off the beaten path for many.

Leilani - You are right, the Inn is apparently closed currently.  I suspect it will open once again when the economy improves.  Afterall, it's one of the nicer places along Jackson Highway between Sacramento and Rancho Murieta.
