Get Noticed... Get Referrals: Start a List

A friend of mine just left the Real Estate Business because her business wasn't producing the income she had expected.  She wasn't getting referrals.

It got me thinking about what it takes to leverage connections.  So I started a few new lists.  (Mom taught us that when we write things down, good things happen.)

List of friends:  Who do I know who likes me and wants me to succeed?

List of business partners:  Who do I refer business to when a customer asks "Who do you know that ____________?"

List of past customers with whom I've lost contact: Who have I forgotten, and what are they doing now? 

Jill Lublin, author or Get Noticed... Get Referrals, says: "Think of your clients, customers, referral sources, vendors, and suppliers as your partners and friends as people who want to help you. Never forget that they're people, not just business statistics, and that you cannot succeed without them."

Mike, 17 yrs ago this month, I decided I needed to mold my business  from one that was transactional in nature, to one that was relational.

 

I asked myself questions similar to those you posed.  I actually started a newsletter campaign, and coyly asked questions like their favorite restaurant in West Chester(my hometown), the next month it may have been favorite dry cleaner, or book store, etc. Those who responded were eligible for that month's prize. (Looking back, I should have gotten that restaurant, that dry cleaner, etc to donate. )

 

Wasn't long before I was getting 30+ responses a month. In Jan of '99, I wrote a letter to each and literally asked them what did I have to do, or should I do in the future  to make them Raving Fans of me like they were of the aforementioned categories. No better way to learn than to just ask!

Mike, I do make lists and yes, writing things down is a great way to keep things in front of you and helps serve as draft for a direction you want to go.

I don't think about this but I need to, I guess...  Business is good and we get referrals but I don't actively seek them.  I should.
