Thanksgiving day serves as a harvest festival. Customarily, it is a
time to give thanks for the abundant harvest and express
gratitude. It is a holiday which is celebrated mostly in Canada
and in the United States. Thanksgiving is primarily known to be
a secular holiday. Lots of people may wonder where
thanksgiving originated. The conventional first thanksgiving is
established as having occurred at the site of Plymouth Plantation
in 1621 though the earliest attested Thanksgiving celebration
was on September 8, 1565 in Saint Augustine, Florida.
In the present day, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second
Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of
November in the United States. During the celebration,
Thanksgiving dinner is held, usually as a gathering of family
members and friends.
In Grenada, there is a national holiday of Thanksgiving Day on
25 October. It is dissimilar to holidays in Canada and the United
States even if it has the same name and happens at the same
time. It commemorates the anniversary of the United States led
invasion of the island in 1983 in response to the deposition and
execution of Grenadan Prime Minister Maurice Bishop.
