Carteret County is known for pristine beaches..we are nicknames the Crystal Coast of North Carolina.
I love the relaxation and family time the beach provides....
But I also know the hazards that pose a threat to my visit if I don't know my surroundings...

Carteret County welcomes thousands of tourists every summer and this little post is to help provide some insight making your trip to the Crystal Coast a safe one.
- Rule #1- Never swim alone.Swimming in lifeguarded areas make for safer swimming but doesnt remove the risks. Dont float off too far or rely on flotation devices to keep you safe once over your head. Another hidden hazard is the unlevel sea floor. Never dive into the ocean as neck and spinal injuries are commonly seen this time of year because of horseplay and risky behavior.
- Rip Currents: Boy the water looks inviting after sitting in the sun reading the latest Nick Sparks Novel..but be careful. Underneath the calm can be channels of under current that even to experienced swimmers can be grave danger. Rip currents run perpendicular to the shoreline. The first thing you do is stay calm. Secondly you swim parallel to the shoreline.
- Stay hydrated and protect your skin. Two overlooked issues can bring on alot of unwanted problems. Sunburn is nothing to joke about. Dehydration is a leading factor in heat stroke ..stay hydrated. Know that alchol depletes your hydration and is not to be mixed with swimming. Remember to reapply sunscreen every hour and after each swim session. Children need additional supervision in the direct sun. Umbrellas are great sources of shade and naps. Younger kids should have hats to protect their scalp and tender ears.
- Heres one you may not have considered....cave-ins. Everyone who has ever been to the beach has more than likely been buried by a "loved one" up to their neck right ?? This occurs from beach goers digging large holes to play in, then unexpecting beachgoers falling in. Walls can cave easily and children have been buried alive. Tragedy that can be prevented by making sure you know your surroundings. If you dig, be sure to fill the hole before you leave.
- Jellyfish and Stingray:The ocean is full of living creatures and although sharks and bigger fish seem to be the ones we are worried about, the more common injuries are from jellyfish stings and stingray punctures. I have taught my kids to shuffle their feel when walking in the ocean so that if a sting ray is resting on the ocean floor it is not stepped directly on top of-the tail raises in defense and the barb on the tail can be very painful ...and both are full of toxins. It is always wise to know where the local emergency room or urgent care center is when vacationing.
As a side note since I own two dogs that I consider family:
Dogs love the beach but there are a variety of hazards that accompany such trip that it is best to keep them home in a safer environment. I take my dogs but only later in the day when the sand is not hot and I am careful to watch their every step. Shells can cut their paws, holes can twist their knees, the heat can cause stroke and the list goes on. Be very watchful. Also know NC has a leash law.
Every day in Carteret County is a great day at the beach...be careful out there and have a great time!
