What did all the little chimneys on these buildings contribute? Help wanted.

Driving through old Searcy Arkansas, which is being restored and revived, I notice the tall old buildings with the little chimneys on the side.  Nearly always the building is taller in the front and slants down toward the back and these little chimneys are at intervals.

This old building has been restored with an architectural firm and a law firm having done the makeover.  The  brick squares above the store fronts look almost like they could have been ventilation. Then we have the two rounded filled-in brick spots on the side.  Explain away if you can.

The one on the right has been restored nicely and it also has the slanted roof and chimneys.  The building that says auction has also, I think, now got a new front which I need to photograph.

Barbara, they just look like normal chimneys to me.  Those old building often had pot belly stoves in them or boilers in basements etc.  Can't you envision a bunch of guys (not meaning to be sexist here:) sitting around the pot bellied stove chewing and spitting and cussing-----talking politics and religion?

Godmother,

Ignore Mr Charles. He knows zero about chimneys. These were setup for multiple Santa Claus appearances. I know that for sure.

If Nutsy's legs were actually that long what the heck does he need that dinky little ladder for?

Charles, that's making a stab at it.  Sexist remark?  Never.  You just left off how the old chewing and spitting and cussing guys would react when some pretty girl walked in!  LOL

Nutsy, you are an expert on everything.  If you'll come down here we'll put you in the building and let you run through and check everything out.  Then we'd know.

Quackers, my cat is missing.  Have you seen her.  That Raven hasn't come calling, has he?

Are these buildings across the street from the Mayfair Hotel?   The Choate building would be The Plaza, wouldn't it?

Bill Fuller and I can't figure out where they are.....I don't pay much attention to downtown Searcy, obviously.

Anita, they are.  I tried to find my old Plaza picture to put on the blog also but couldn't find it rapidly enough.

Seems like a funny place for chimneys.  Seems to me they were to done to add beauty.

Theoroa, you could be right.  Or to add strength.  Especially on the corners I can see adding more bricks and making a sort of column.

Barbara, I thought you were only asking about the ones on the side street----the ones on the front are not likely chimneys at all----just decorative

Bob, thanks for finding that blog.  I love the band picture best of all I believe.

Nutsy, you are truly exceptional.  I'll be driving along a street and a lowly squirrel runs in front of my car.  I think to myself, "How'd Nutsy grow so big and gain so much intelligence and stature when he came from common squirrel stock."  Ooops.....sorry.  That didn't sound right.  I'm so proud to have you as my godson.
