Moisture and Carpenter Ants: A Recipe For Disaster

By
Home Inspector with JTHIS-Professional Home Inspection Team NACHI 04062481

Moisture and water beat away at wooden siding. That's why it's so important to trim trees and branches away from your home. It's also important to keep your siding properly painted and caulk around areas of possible water intrusions.

Once the wood soaks up sufficient moisture carpenter ants are mysteriously attracted to the wood. It's almost like bears to honey. Gone unnoticed and improperly maintained your perfect home can turn into this faster than you think.

Yuck!

Don't ya just hate those buggers?!?!  In Arizona we also have a different parasite to contend with.  As the saying goes, "Tere are two kinds of homes.  Those that have termites.  Nad those that WILL HAVE termites.

Good post!

Thanks for the tips, Suesan.  I little bit of routine maintenance does go a long way for prevention.

Yuck, Suesan.  It is astounding how much damage tiny little creatures can make to a home.

Sue - Since they're "carpenter" ants, wouldn't it be nice if we could train them to do the repairs :  )

Suesan,

This is a very important reminder. The damage can be extensive, and also very expensive to repair.

Suesan, that is amazing, hard to believe that such little things can do so much damage, but you have the picture to prove it.
