The expansive grounds of the complex include the Oceanside boardwalk, an observation tower, a unique butterfly garden. There is even an authentically constructed Chiki hut sitting on the beach that is used as an educational classroom for both students and visitors.

Gumbo Limbo is dedicated to nature conservancy issues and furthering the understanding about the fragile ocean ecosystem.  It is also a cooperative foundation that has been established since 1984. The founding organizations that continue to support the work and research that is done at this complex include the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center Corporation, the Palm Beach School Districts, the city of Boca Raton and Florida Atlantic University.

Among the many programs offered at Gumbo Limbo are marine life classes that are provided free of charge to 3rd, 5th and 7th grade students who attend school in Palm Beach County. High school students get to experience their marine life educational instruction while attending a real-life, floating classroom that is only accessible by boat.

The Gumbo Limbo Nature Center even has seminars, classes and lectures that the public can sign up for during the year. Inside the main complex center there are a number of teaching stations where anyone can go and learn an amazing amount of information the plants and animals that live in the oceans and along the coasts.

There is a Sea Turtle Research and Conservation program that is also associated with the Gumbo Limbo Environmental Complex. This program has been operational for more than 30 years and today it is responsible for conducting nesting activity research along a 5 mile stretch of Boca Raton beaches during the peak season which is March to October.

Professors, employees and students at the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center are involved in studies about the effect of different lighting on sea turtles, and there even studies being conducted that involve the anatomy and swimming abilities of these gentle giants that live in the oceans.

This top Boca Raton attraction has a number of unique programs for families, kids, teens or adults to participate in throughout the year. The majority of these educational adventures are geared toward family participation. In these instances one, or more, adults must accompany the children and stay for the entire event.
