House Names

By
Real Estate Agent with Coastal Properties Group International - Christie's International

We've spoken before about naming houses, especially in the luxury home market. It's interesting to see the derivation of names in different parts of the country.

In Newport, Rhode Island, where I grew up, most of the estates had American names: The Waves, SeaCliff, Hammersmith Farm, The Elms, Swiss Village, The Chalet  ...  Most of these pertained to the location, the view, the style of architecture, or the family who built the home.

Here in Florida,  we take many names from Spanish: Casa Bonita, Casa Serena, Bella Vista ... using the same criteria, and often referring to the Mizener style homes, or Mediterranean style.

I like some of the names in Hawaii as well, though I need to have them translated. One recent one I came across was Nanea - meaning tranquillity, leisure and something of absorbing interest.

What about the names in your area? What's the most interesting name you've found?

I love the practice of naming homes.  In England they had the most wonderful names.  Here in Denver I don't see the practice happening very much.  Guess we are just too new!
