Uh-Oh...Now What?

By

This Post isn't about marketing and children, rather its about having your children with you and a client wants to meet in an hour. UH-OH...

I have banned my girls from my office. My girls are 10 & 8 and wonderful little girls, by themselves. Put them together and we have the beginnings of WWIII. Normally my 15 yo son will babysit if I have a sales meeting or floor duty, but the day I banned my girls my son was at church camp. I had a sales meeting that I had to attend, there was a guest speaker from Bryan Tracey coming into the office. I had left my girls in my office, (they like to play Real Estate) and went upstairs to the sales meeting. When I came out of the sales meeting I went to my office to find dirty foot prints on my wall. I was really upset over this because my office partner had paid to have the office painted before we moved into it. For this reason and the fact that they act like little banshee's when they are there is why I banned them.

Of course the inevitable would happen... I have a day off and I had let my son stay the night with a friend the night before. I had the intentions of only going to the office to pick up my check from a closing I had the day before and then the girls and I were going shopping to get ready for Vacation Bible School that started that night. We are in the drive-thru line for Wendy's when a investor client calls. We had put an offer in on a property the night before and received a counter. He wants to meet in 30 minutes and go over the counter, the property disclosure, and take pictures of the property. Before he accepts the counter he wants to estimate how much he is going to have to invest in repairs. He had told me the night before that he can't stand rude and disrespectful children. UH OH!!! Now What???

I can't miss the opportunity right? I warn my children, that they had better be on their best behavior. I meet with my client, we go over the paperwork and then go to the house. Luckily my girls were behaved, they had the curious kid questions, but that was ok, my client (a single father) actually told me that they were more behaved than his 9 yo daughter. He didn't purchase the house, too many repairs needed to be made. And my client's daughter will be cheer-leading with my 8 yo this fall. I told him that he can't get away from me because he has to see 3 times a week at practice. We both got a good laugh out of it, not only do I have a client I have made a friend as well. My family has invited his family over for the 4th of July and in the meantime I will be looking for another home for him to invest in.

It can be hard when you take your kids with you.  My wife often asks me why I do not work from home more often.  I have 3 kids 6,4 & 2 years old.  As I am sure every parent out there knows, as soon as the phone rings something goes off in their head that they need to ask you a question or feel the need to yell.  I would love to work from home more but it is just not doable.  My kids are all well behaved but lets face they are kids and are unpredictable as to how things will go.

I had a similar situation happen to me a few weeks ago where I had a metting with an investor.  My wife had to take my daughter for her 2 year check-up and was not home in time so I had to take my 2 boys with me.  I properly briefed them in the car on the way to the meeting.  They made it for about 20 minutes on their best behavior, then we went to the back yard.  They went a bit nuts on me.  Luckily the client was a parent of 3 as well and understood.

Good for you.  Kids have a wonderful way of rising to the occassion when you need them to the most.  My kids are the same age and I'm glad to hear that WWIII starts around your house too.  Gone are the days when I could brag about how my kids never fight.  I'm sure this stage will pass too.

I often have clients show up with kids in tow for the 2 - 4 hour inspection.  I just, with the parents permision, get them involved in checking doors & windows, outlets (if old enough), light switches, cracks in the walls, etc.  It helps us (the adults) stay focused on the inspection instead of chasing kids all over the place.  Give them some attention, make them feel part of the "team", and drop a buck in their pocket for "helping".

 Works for me!

JOE:Boy do I know what you mean about the phone. I have tried to tell my kids, "when you see the phone in my ear, do not talk to me until I get off, unless its an emergency. Tattling does not constitute an emergency." It hasn't worked yet...lol. So whats up with that, how come our children don't want to talk to us until we start talking to someone else?

KATE:Everyday is a bit of WWIII in my house. If you throw the 15 yo in with them its even worse. There are even days when it looks like a bomb was dropped on the house...lol. Honestly, I'm waiting for the stage to pass as well, I will celebrate when it finally arrives.

ERBY:Luckily so far I haven't had to deal with kids on an inspection. When I had my girls with me on Friday all they really did was play hide and seek in the closet. This was ok with me, when I have had clients with small children I do try to get the kids involved a little bit. I will also play with them and ask which rooms they like the best, if this were their home, which room would be their's. These things go a long way with this kids and the parent's too.

I have a 11 and 4 y/o. I bring them everywhere. Closing and viewing properties etc. It not easy on them or myself. I have been in this business over 20 years. I think as far as my customers go they like to see the family atmosphere. My mother who still works every now then in real estate, used to do the same thing. Drag me along. Now I do the same thing with my children. The knowledge the children get is far better than any babysitter could provide. My 4 y/o asked the other day"Daddy you sold another house"? You gotta love it. Enjoy the children I do.

Frank- I commend you for being such a hands on father. In this business it is very easy to get sucked in and not see the light of day for a few days. It must be difficult to have them with you at viewings and closing but at least they are with you.

Joddie- I have thought of bringing my children along and volunteering to help out with minor repairs and things of that nature, the opportunity just has not presented itself to me yet. I will however run it by a client before I bring my children out with me on any appointment.

Jamie-Lynn- Its not easy. There are some days that I really miss not seeing my kids, its those days that I leave the house at 6:30 AM and then not get home until 8 PM. They get an hour of my time and then its off to bed for them. Makes me miss the days when they were babies and I spent every minute of every day with them.
