Real Estate Agent with INET Realty Honolulu, HI 68131

I just finished listening to some training tapes by a "business coach" & something he said has been bothering me greatly.

He kept mentionning that in order to succeed in the real estate industry, I have to stop behaving like the head nurse & more like the doctor (actually surgeon)! He went on to say that I have to have a certain schedule & stop being available to my clients on demand, that I have to stop performing the $15/hour tasks & concentrate on lead generation... because that is where the money is. As an example he said that the successful real estate agent should delegate showing homes to an assistant (the nurse) & have someone answer the phone for him.

Problem is, comparing a realtor to a surgeon is ridiculous! Sure, some of us may make the same amount of money a surgeon makes & even more, but we are not holding someone's health or life and death in our hands. With less than 100 hours of training to become a licenced real estate salesperson, we certainly don't have the same level of education.

Moreover, I don't know the main reason most of you entered the real estate business for. I can guess it is for the potential of racking in huge commissions while having a flexible schedule. Personnally it was for the pleasure of helping my clients throughout the entire process. I don't mind performing the $15 or less/hours tasks  that will help with the process and I love looking at & showing homes. At times I have been a cleaner, gardener, painter, dog sitter... you name it!

I like to think that our profession is of providing "service", in the form of personnal counsel. As such...we are more like a concierge than a doctor!

From your intro I think the coach was focusing on the need to manage your time well in order to become more effective. As your business grows you may not be able to instantly stop what you are doing to meet all of your clients' demands - that is when your support staff will be able to fill in for you.

Monique - It is wonderful to provide such in-depth service to our clients, and most of us do. However, there are some clients that will take advantage of people that are so giving of their time. Your time and knowledge is your most valuable asset in this business.

Gloria: Yes, that's what the coach meant... but I would have preferred an analogy with a business and not the medical profession.

Judy: I believe that too! The challenge I often run into is balancing the fact that I want to give my clients full attention without being taken advantage too. Like the couple I showed over 40 homes all over the island that ended up not purchasing- at least not from me.... made me feel like a tourist guide working for free :-)!
