In our new connected world, are watches obsolete

We all know who Bernard Madoff is by now and why he is famous. I was reading an article describing an upcoming government auction being held to dispose of articles once owned by the Ponzi king. The government expects to raise at least $500,000 which would go to the victims of his investment schemes. Not much, considering the magnitude of the debt, but at least something.

Many items of jewelry will be in the auction, but what caught my eye were the watches. About 40 watches will be included, some some valued at $75,000 or more. I know watches can be expensive but who needs 40 of them? In fact, why would anyone pay that kind of money for a timepiece. I guess the value is in the collectability, but still seems like a waste of resources to me.

I bought a "nice" watch about ten years ago and I've worn it everyday since then. But recently it began acting up and the estimate to clean and repair the worn parts will run about $300. That seems like a lot and one could buy a new watch for less than that. Not a "nice" watch, but an efficient one.

But then it came to me, do I need a watch at all". I have worn a watch forever, but the time is available everywhere today. The time is in my car, on my computer, all over my house and office, and on my cell phone/PDA. If I want to know what time it is, no problem just look around. So, I've decided to put the watch in the drawer saving the repair costs, and forgo wearing a watch at all. I know I'll feel naked at first but I'll get used to it, and I'll always be on time just like before.

What do you think of my plan, do you still wear a watch everyday and if so, could you do without one?

Hi Greg,  I couldn't stop wearing a watch.  For me, it's kind of like a fashion statement.  It would be like my wife leaving the house without earrings, it's not going to happen.

Greg, I wear a watch every day, more out of habit than necessity.

Haven't worn a watch in over 20 years!  What a freeing thought!

Greg I went throught watch withdrawal about 20 years ago.  I thought the same thing at the time - there is a clock everywhere so why wear I watch.  When I started teaching, giving workshops  and conducting lots of meetings etc I soon learned  that wearing a watch on those days is critical for me to keep things on schedule.I got distracted by asking somebody what time it was one too many times......and it occured to me that needed to end.

The rest of the 'time' - watch free!

Greg - Watches do seem to be a thing of the past. I still wear one my self because it has sentimental value (my husband gave it to me), but I could do without wearing it everyday. Looking around me right now I see the time in 4 different locations other than on my wrist! (Computer, cable box, hanging clock, & cell phone).

Greg, I can't go without a watch.  Mine is always 10 minutes fast.  Without it, I'd never get anywhere on time.

Greg... Funny you wrote this. Yesterday I was kind of having a tough day without my watch. Like you, it dawned on me about a year ago that I couldn't escape knowing what time it is. So why do I need a watch. Then I went through the whole rationalization thing about it being jewelery, art, a fashion statement, etc. The breaking point for me was I got tired of my watch banging on my laptop every time I was typing at the keyboard.

I'm coming up on the one year mark not wearing a watch. I don't think about it most of the time, but it does pop into my brain once in a while and I look at watches sometimes when I go to a store that carries them. I think I'm kind of lonesome for something that is no longer relevant. Like a call to the past. I won't wear it, but I won't get rid of it either... it's in my top dresser drawer with other aging treasures.

Hello friends, Interesting comments to compare. There are still two sides of the debate but wearing watches may have seen their day. I wonder what the discussions were like when that new- fangled wrist watch was trying to unseat the pocket watch in popularity.

Personally I think mine will remain in the drawer like some others. Thank you for your thoughtful comments.
