As we approach the end of the year we always begin mapping out our projected course for next year in the way of our business plan. A core concept of motivational and management training in our office is to identify goals. However, there is a more basic need. First must accurately identify your current location. If you don’t know where you are, you will have absolutely no idea how to get where you want to be.

Setting goals is wonderful! You cannot successfully lead a family, business or nation without them, but in order to reach the goal, you need a brutally honest assessment of where you are right now.

So knowing where you want to go is grand, but make sure you know where you stand so you know which way to steer your life because after-all, a goal is nothing more than a dream with a deadline.

I've been starting to think about my goals for 2010 as far as selling Real Estate. I'm having some trouble deciding what a realistic goal is in this market. Any suggestions?

Hi Linda, Thanks for reading. We struggled with that at one point as well so we switched our focus slightly to a daily goal checklist of doing the right steps every day continuously with the idea that enough of the right little steps in the right direction will get us there. Plus getting to check things off and get daily ratings still helped keep us motivated despite a lack of results. It included the normal stuff (#calls, e-mails, blogs, etc) and also included other things like whether or not we worked out and for how long. Anything associated to "Goal Setting" I am always interested in! People all too often focus on the "Goal" itself.  Now prior to setting this goal my wife and I sat down andwent the "Why Do We Want" steps...  What does this mean?  We want to take a vacation. Why Do We Want to take a vacation? To get away with just us as a family.  Why Do We Want to get away as a family? To forge a strong bond and create that family value so missed. Why Do We Want....... Get my point...

So most people set Income Goals, right? well if you look back over the last 24 months it would bring you to your knees some of the things I have seen, families wiped out, and by the way they met their income goals... Hmmmm  what does that tell you? The "Number" itself doesn't mean much when you get down to it, the WHY that number means what it does to you IS the most important aspect.  All you do is back it out, I want to save X amount, I want to be able to spend X amount, I want to buy my wife an X dollar amount gift, I want to do this or that... THEN set your goal around that. Break it down to the Sale, what does ONE sale earn you in income? Then divide that number by your Income Goal, and divide by 52, that is what you need to sell that week. You can go even deeper to How Many Contacts does it take to get one sale, let's say it is 5 to 1 multiply 5 by the number it will take to earn your income and you now have how many people you need to talk to EVERY week in order to hit your goal

Setting a realistic goal is important, if you have been in the business for 5 years lets say, and you have never closed more than 5 transactions in a month why would you set up a 60 Sold Total? Start with where you've been, what it took you to get that and grow by 1% I suggest you read 2 books before setting these goals 1. Raving Fans and 2. Travelers Gift

Hi Ricky, That is a really great point when looking at goals. The bigger the Why the greater the passion to achieve it. I've read Raving Fans and would also recommend it (super easy, read, but important), and I'll be sure to check out Travelers Gift. Thank you again for the valuable insight on this.

Great post. you have to know where you are to figure out where you are going.  I don't re-group in January, I just never have the deep energy.  Every year during my birthday week (April) I take two full days to rest, reflect, recharge and goal set, amazing things always happen.  I call it my "personal holiday" I think everyone should do it!

Additionally you have to break down the goals to specific actions you need to take in order to attain those goals.
