Infamous Nigerian Real Estate

By
Real Estate Agent with Salt Lake Homefinders at Aubrey & Associates

I recently received a question on Trulia (I monitor buyers questions and inquiries for Salt Lake and the surrounding areas) from a buyer interested in townhomes.  He was asking for an agent to help him negotiate on a property in a golf course community, ok, right up my alley!  I looked at the listing referenced in the post, and  I realized that Trulia was incorrect, as they sometimes are, about some of the information they gave him.  Great!  True textbook stuff.... Buyer has a problem, I have a solution. A match made in heaven!

So, I put on my trusty Buyer's Agent Hat, and emailed him.  I told him that the area he was looking at was not in Salt Lake, but actually in Orem (about 45 minutes south of Salt Lake), talked about the area, asked whether he was looking to move here or looking for a vacation home, etc.  In true Buyer's Agent style, I was going to help this man.  I was amazed at the speed and efficiency of my email, words flowed from me with lightning intensity: valuable information to prospect, check...probing, open ended questions, check,... call to action and ask for the business...check. I had it all.

I want to back up here and tell you that we actually do get a lot of inquiries from all over the country and internationally because, well, we Do have 7 ski resorts within a 30 minute drive of Salt Lake, and we Do have the Greatest Snow On Earth.  I know this not only because the Tourist Bureau tells me so, but I actually have skied in the past, B.C.(before children), and when I had a few less pounds following me down the slope.

But, I digress.  After this magnificent piece of salesmanship (blushing shyly), I received a reply from Mr. John Cole.  But rather than try to paraphrase his reply, I will simply let you read it as follows:

Nigerian Real Estate Email

Yep, it was the dreaded Nigerian letter, the beginning of the ultimate scam to relieve me of money.  I was almost curious enough to go further with him just to see how he intended to get me to put my funds into his hands. However, when Steve (my husband and partner) threatened to take My New Moon tickets away if I did, cooler heads prevailed.

And so ends my first and hopefully Only foray into the deep intrigues of The Nigerian Real Estate Scam.  Anyone have any similar experiences?

I love your sense of humor and curiosity.  I had a story similar to yours which might be worth writing about some day.

Deborah & Steve,

Thanks for sharing this. Chris Hansen of NBC did a couple of segments on these crooks.  I wish law enforcement would do them like the wat they do the child predators

Third clue: Bad use of English & made up words. "Modelity of how the found" ???  You would think they would at least have one American/European on staff to make sure they get words right!

And it keeps on happening.  You just know they've got to have some takers because they keep trying.

Send out 10,000 e-mails, get only one in 100 responding and you still got 10 suckers on the line.

What's that PT Barnum line about a sucker born every minute!

Glad you weren't taken!

I love the picture "Almost Taken"

This line had me rolling on the floor!:  "when I had a few less pounds following me down the slope."

Yes, they do keep on coming.  If I had a dimefor every time I got one of these....wait, maybe I could turn that into a letter to send out to all the scammers. Yes, I will work with you, send me a dime so that I can....

Mr. Alan David has recently contacted me by email and phone.  Once I heard him speak, I had no doubt that it was the dreaded Nigerian Scam.  On the other hand, if they really are making bags of money, surely they need to spend it and launder that money.  Maybe some Maui real estate would be just the ticket!

And Hey Georgina, I know a bridge in Arizona they could buy as well.  We could split the commission on both and really have a good year!  lol

How's the beach over there ...I sure miss it!

Yes, I agree, agents beware!  I had another one recently, they are becoming more subtle (no doubt because of my witty repartee'), but this time the "gentleman" actually wanted me to send him properties for which he would approve and buy for cash with out seeing.  I always seems to be a 4 bedroom home as well (maybe if we think he has a family, we will be more receptive?).

And just an fyi, these both came from Trulia....hmmm.

I actually have a Nigerian agent at my new office, I think I just might refer any Nigerian deals to him.
