I often read post on Active Rain about people achieving top ranking for Google or Yahoo. And if you think about it, it’s actually quite an accomplishment! After all, with some keyphrases, your page is competing against sometimes millions of other pages. Do you realize what this means? If you are on the first page of Google (even if you’re ranked #10) and there are one million competing pages, you then rank in the top 0.001% for that keyword! Think about that for a second – That’s a pretty elite group!
Let me give you an example
I just found out that my ActiveRain Web Design blog is #5 for the search term real estate design blog and #4 for real estate web design blog. The competition for those keywords are 27 million and 9.7 million respectively. This means that I am in the top 0.00004% for real estate web design blog and the top 0.000018% for real estate design blog.
Because it’s been way too long since I was in school, I use this site to help me calculate my percentage. To do this, simply input your Google Position into the calculator (in this example it’s 10) and input the amount of Competing Pages (in this in this example: 1,000000). Click calculate for your number.
Finding Your Competition
If you have trouble finding out how many pages are competing for a keyword, just look on the top right of the Google Search Results…
Now It's Your Time To Brag
How many zeros can you put after the decimal? Four? Five? What is the most competitive keyword that that shows your website on page one? Leave a comment and to include the keyword, your ranking, and the competition.
And remember, if nothing else, this is great ammo for marketing. The next time you are giving a listing presentation, pull out a printout of your Google Ranking and tell them your page is in the top 0.0000X% for that keyword and that it competes against X million other pages.
