Here Is Your Chance to Brag!

By
Real Estate Agent with Dakno Marketing

I often read post on Active Rain about people achieving top ranking for Google or Yahoo. And if you think about it, it’s actually quite an accomplishment! After all, with some keyphrases, your page is competing against sometimes millions of other pages. Do you realize what this means? If you are on the first page of Google (even if you’re ranked #10) and there are one million competing pages, you then rank in the top 0.001% for that keyword! Think about that for a second – That’s a pretty elite group!

Let me give you an example

I just found out that my ActiveRain Web Design blog is #5 for the search term real estate design blog and #4 for real estate web design blog. The competition for those keywords are 27 million and 9.7 million respectively. This means that I am in the top 0.00004% for real estate web design blog and the top 0.000018% for real estate design blog.

Because it’s been way too long since I was in school, I use this site to help me calculate my percentage. To do this, simply input your Google Position into the calculator (in this example it’s 10) and input the amount of Competing Pages (in this in this example: 1,000000). Click calculate for your number.

Finding Your Competition

If you have trouble finding out how many pages are competing for a keyword, just look on the top right of the Google Search Results…

Now It's Your Time To Brag

How many zeros can you put after the decimal? Four? Five? What is the most competitive keyword that that shows your website on page one? Leave a comment and to include the keyword, your ranking, and the competition.

And remember, if nothing else, this is great ammo for marketing. The next time you are giving a listing presentation, pull out a printout of your Google Ranking and tell them your page is in the top 0.0000X% for that keyword and that it competes against X million other pages.

It is amazing that we are able to compete with professional SEO'ers. I have about a dozen clients now and I have them all in the top ten on Google and Yahoo in their respective fields. I only optimize them about once a week and their phones are ringing! This is fantastic and thank you, Brad.

Connie: Glad I could help. One thing I find revealing is that with many people, they achieve top ranking but for keywords with little competition or little search activity. The value really comes when you start to see people who are on page one with keywords competing against 1M, 10M or more. You really start to see an amazing amount of traffic and leads for those keywords.

I am consistently on page 2 of Google for my three desired searches.  Not bad, but could be better for sure.  The second page just doesn't get the client.

I just started blogging about 3 months ago and I was l the way down at #64 on Google for "athens ga real estate"  so I decided to look at some alternative keywords and have been targeting "athens ga relocation"  where there are only 423,000+- competing pages and I now 3 out of top 10 on page 1 of google (most of the other are relos search engines) and 6 out of positions 11-20 are also mine.  What's really cool is the leads I am getting are educated buyers serious about moving to Athens!

I also now have positions 17 & 18 for "athens ga real estate" which is 0.0014166666666666665 and 1,200,000+- competing pages.  So this has been a decent crawl up for me, I think.

On MSN,  I have the 6 out of 10 on the 1st page for "athens ga relocation" between all my blogs and sites and I am number 20 for "athens ga real estate"

I would have to say the most competitive phrase I am on the first page for is "Real Estate" - From Canada where I live, a Google query states approximately 366,000,000 results. I fluctuate between #5-#10 depending on what my competition (Little guys like Remax, Coldwell Banker and the NYtimes are doing) - Using your calculator it gives me a number of 0.000001366120218579235 :)

Do you have any data for time spent versus $$$ earned?  The time could be used elsewhere if it is not generating an ROI.

It was a general comment.  I have noticed a number of people from our area weighing in on AR about their high search engine rankings but I know they do very little business so the rankings are not converted into business.   Just wondered what the general results have been.

That's part of the point of this post. Top ranking for a keyword that has no competition and no traffic doesn't have much benefit. In addition, the website has to be able to convert the visitors into leads.

Great post, but we also want to look at if anyone is searchnig for particular terms.  I didn't show any searches in the wordtracker database for "real estate design blog" :(  Of course, with long tail searches out there it might just yet to be found :)
